Co2 gas?

has anyone used pure CO2 gas for welding their car?

Is it recommended? im learning to weld and gather its harder to use than other shielding gases, but i dont want to mess with BOC etc

We used to get it for nothing by the truck load but it does produce an odd weld,Argoshield or Coogar are the ones to use if poss.

Hi, pure c02 is fine especially if you can get a pub bottle and regulator, I pay £1 a kilo to get mine from a local fire extinguiser engineering place.
cougar and argoshield are great but you would need to use higher amps and obviously have to pay more initially.
My entire chassis and everything else for the car are welded with pure co2 and Im very happy with the results.

hi there over here in New zealand ive been a fitter /welder for the past 23 years and i use CO2 all the time, just increase heat and lower wire speed.
Create better penatrating welds and less spatter:)

I too use pure CO2 with my MIG welder, I keep the gas flow as low as possible without causing oxidation (bubbles in the weld pool) and it works just fine for me. Coogar or Argoshield do give better welds and they are easier for novices to get decent welds with but with practice good welding can be done with pure CO2.

Thanks for the advice boys, ill go for the co2 then, as its the easiest to get hold of.

Just to confirm, when you say pub gas you have to make sure its pure CO2 right?
