I cant get my head around brake pipes. I thought that if the fitting on the pipe is say male then it has one type of end and if female the other type. But looking at the fitting to a flexible pipe this doesn't appear to be the case. Can anyone clear this up please ? Hopefully there will be attachments.

Looking at the flexi pipe pictured, you'll need a male end on the copper pipe ;)

As a general rule of thumb if one fitting is concave ( Female ), The other fitting will need to be convex ( Male ) in order to marry the two fittings together :)

nope that flexi is male its just chamfered your female flare on the second pic is poor thats the problem. you need to turn the tool into it a lot more.

Hi Peter

May I ask if that is a new flexi pipe & do you have a better picture ?

Your image is quite difficult to view in any great detail.

Here's a typical female pipe flare

I find it best to avoid over cooking the forming of the female flare, tends to make them a little weak & troublesome to seal.

I know these are not flexi pipe ends but they do represent the kind of ends usualy found on flexi pipes

Female left & male right

It has been my personal experience that the male end is by far the most common end to find at the rigid pipe end.

Hi Ronnie,

I've taken another photo but I can't copy and paste it so it has to be an attachment again. Both ends of the flexi pipe are the same.

Cheers

Hi Peter

That certainly looks as if that was made to take a female flare as Ash has said :)

Don't think I have seen one quite so chamfered as that before.

Perhaps Flyerncle will give us his thoughts :)

As for me .... Gotta get to specsavers :D :D

To be fair Ronnie, when I looked at my first set of attachments, I couldn't work out what they were either !!! Still don't know how to copy and paste pictures.

I upload my pictures to photobucket & copy then paste the IMG code into the forum post ;)

Probably can be done for images stored on your PC but I do not have a clue how to :o :o

Hi Adrian,

Its coming along, but a bit slower than I would like. With holidays, etc. it's taken almost a month to complete the brake and fuel lines. Hopefully in the next fortnight, still off school, I can make inroads.

Cheers

Ronnie,it would appear to be a male fitting as previously said. I think as the picture is very close and detailed it looks a little odd but copper brake pipe would mould to fit as it's soft.
