Welcome to the forum.

Good question for which I do not have the answer to hand.

It has been discussed before, the conclusion is that it's the only one suitable due to the way the suspension damper load is transmitted to the lower wishbone rather than through the suspension strut as in the sierra donor.

Hi piston head. I'm from Estonia. Also there is a member named alga, who is from Lithuania.
The answer to your question is in this post http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=42568&postcount=1.
As for Maxi ball joints. I found that for me it was cheaper to order them from Saturn Sports Cars from UK, than from local motor factors. All info about Maxi ball joint part numbers from different manufactures is also in the referred post.
So if you have any more questions just ask, as there is lots of knowledge info in this forum. Also try to use forum search, as most of things are already discussed.

With best regards
Madis

Hi piston head. I got the ball joint pack from EDS, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/330462019865 . It cost me around €72 with shipping, which I think is a fair price for 6 joints.

Some people here in Lithuania use some Opel lower ball joints (apparently, from Vectra A/ Astra F). That requires adapting the lower wishbone design for the Opel joint, however apparently fits into the Sierra upright without modification:
