Front Uprights

Hi everyone

Little while ago i got some cortina uprights given to me from my uncle which he had spare from his locost he built a few years ago.

I have now got to wondering weather the front suspension based on the Ron Champion book (which my uncle built) is the same as the Haynes roadster which i am building?

Soooo, can anyone tell me if I can use the Cortina Uprights on the Haynes roadster?

No it's different. Sell the cortina ones, buy some sierra ones and you should be quids in :)

The simple answer is yes you can use cortina up rights,how ever you will need to change the design of the front wishbones. You will need to have a full understanding of steering geomentry ie camber,caster,toe,bump steer,ackerman,king pin inclanation etc to make sure your car is safe to drive. You have to weigh up wether it's worth reinventing the wheel when you can pick up the book know the design works and build it. Your time and money your choice.

Im a Design Engineer by trade so should be able to work something out.

Why though? You can sell them for more than the cost of the items you need.

Just on the subject of redesigning uprights..... you guys mights be intrested to know that i've designed my own rear upright which use the same wish bones and sierra parts. Waiting for them to be tested then will mabe make a few pairs if anyone is interested?

Also hope to develop the rear upright so that the hub carrier/bearings are part of the uprights.

And I made the comment because you've received advice that the consensus of which is that it is better to use Sierra uprights, and yet you seem happy to go ahead with the Cortina units, I formed the impression that you felt your engineering background trumped that advice, if I was mistaken, I apologise.

Hi all

Last night i spent a few hours on AutoCAD and have finalised that you can use the cortina front upright providing you extend the upper front wishbones by 54mm and remove the 8'degree angle for the camber adjuster.

I have DWG drawings available that show zero bump steer using this setup.

No other changes needed.

So the steering arm is located in exactly the same place in relation to the lower pivot?

The relation between the track rod end and the maxi ball joint is not the same as the relation between the joint in the steering rack and the wishbone mount. But after drawing the suspension with the sock closed and partly closed there are no changes in distance from the track rod ends to the chassis.

What affect does the wishbone lenght change and geometry change have on the roll centre?

If anyone could give me the dimesions from the maxi ball joint to transit drop link on the sierra setup then ill do the same drawing but use the sierra upright to compare.
