View Full Version : I feel really stupid, what have i done wrong ???

Did a bit on the build today, but have come accross 2 problems.

The book says when fitting the front upper wisbones, the longer tube should be at the front of the car. When i put it together like this, my hub leans backwards (even with the offset in the mushroom all the way back).

When holding the other side wisbone above, it looks as if it would be perfect. (longer side of the wisbone at the back).

Is it a missprint, or am i missing something silly? Wishbone brackets were all fitted using a jig, and the wishbones are all to book spec with sierra uprights.

Also, the steering coupling i've aquired has a locating pin on the inside of the clamp, but my steering column (from a different sierra) doesn't have a hole for it to sit in. Is it ok just to drill a hole?

Finally, when extending the steering column, have people cut the triangle bit and welded the extension tube to this??

Hope someone can help me out. I'm stumped

Nope , that's correct. That's your caster angle, the hole in the mushroom should be at the front top make that angle as big as possible - its that leaning back that gives you the self centering.

Any advice on th steering column?

with regards to your steering coupling, it might be easier to just grind out the locating pin. Otherwise it should be fine to drill a hole in the other part, just do it in a piller drill as your going to need a fair degree of accuracy for that hole.

David,

I extended my column between the rubber ring and the triangular joint.
This section was round on mine and a good fit inside a left over piece of seamless wishbone tube

Hope that helps.

I think that bit's cast iron on mine, dont fancy trying it with a mig :|

David,

the piece you are looking at is drop forged steel. A type of casting, but not cast iron. It will weld fine with a mig.

You still need to make the column collapsable ie the triangular section must still slide.

grind out the pin is only a feature on a rare few joints, also makes it easier to adjust the column length without drilling loads of holes.
