Just signed up for night classes at a local tech. Basically they will instruct you on how to use the machinery and let you work on your own projects. So first project is to learn how to TIG weld and make the fuel tank. Then look at some lathe work. Looking forward to it.

Steve,

I think it all boils down to the college to be honest. The title of this course is "Metalworking Skills and Wrought Iron Crafts" The aim is to "provide you with a working knowledge of metals and welding. It also provides engineering machinery to enable you to manufacture light engineering components. Subjects covered will include, using machine and hand tools, welding techniques, hot and cold metal work, gas welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, brazing, sheet metal development, drilling, turning and milling"

Having gone to see the tutor it is basically 2.5hrs a week for 36 weeks of doing what you want to learn or to use. He says he has taken the course for 10yrs and some of the guys have been coming for 8 of them. One guy builds choppers another has been making parts for a Cobra, last year one guy put a diesel engine in a motorbike and is currently riding his way to Australia on it. Now you do need to show you have done something to work towards a NVQ or something and last year they had to do a little paperwork on Health and Safety, this year it may be working with others but as the tutor said if he was to accidently leave the answer sheet on desk wink wink.

Yes it does cost £170 but thats 90 hrs worth so at £1.88 per hr thats good value!!

Also had a tour of the CNC dept, it is gob smacking to see what these machines can produce.
