My internet is playing up on my Tower.

The only way i can get pages to load is to refresh the screen a couple of times and when they do come up it takes ages to load.

The router is fine as is the cable from it to the tower.

I know i should be asking for help on a computer website, but this the only site i can get on without to much of a problem, without getting time outs.

Any help would be appericated.

XP

Start > run > Cmd

or

Vista

Start > then "cmd" in the thingy box ( I have only used vista 3 times )

You should get a black screen with

C:>

type

nslookup www.nominet.org.uk

and press enter

What is the result?

next type

ipconfig /all

and press enter

what is the entry for DNS server

next in internet explorer type

http://212.58.244.71

and see how fast it gets to a page.

Hi TT,
I'm XP Pro with IE8

Result 1

Can't find server name for address 93.188.163.182

Result 2
DNS Server 93.188.163.182

Result 3

Hope that makes sense to you.

Either way.

go into control pannel, network connections,

select either the wireless or the local area connection depending on if your on wifi or a cable.

scroll down in the little window to internet protocol and click on it.

Where it says "Obtain DNS...." change this to "Use the following"

And enter

208.67.222.222

Click OK.

See if that improves things.

nothing on the first one

the second one said Hello

well i said "ping ...." on the cmd prompt. But the fact that you go the hello from that server proves your internet is ok.

As with my response just above, change your DNS server.

No problem.

To draw a loose analogy with phones.

you "Directory Enquiries" number is not working.

So when you want to ring the bbc they give you the telephone number.

I have specified a new "Directory Enquiries" for you.

In computer internet terms "Direcorty Enquiries" is DNS - Domain Name Resolution Service ( dont ask me why the R's lost )

DNS returns the IP address ( bit like a phone number for computers ) of the website you want.

The haynes site was probably cached by your local windows system.

These are the correct DNS servers for orange.

195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95

May give you better and more reliable performance than the free one I listed above.

DNS stands for Domain Name System -- no R's lost!
