View Full Version : Zetec Whats needed?

As above i'm planning on using the zetec out of my mk5 escort.

I've got a copy of Classic Ford and in there, they are dropping a Zetec into a mk2 escort and it says I need a new water rail and a water pump that rotates the other way, Then on another page it says the water rail is only needed as it would foul the bulkhead of the Escort but as it is going into a kit car this should not be a problem right?

The sump is another major factor I need to fabricate.

With regards to the water pump rotating in the opposite direction is this right? as I thought the engine cooling system was designed to flow one way??

Please help as I know there are some people using a zetec.

On a blacktop zetec the water pump spins in the opposit direction to the rest of the pullies. Not sure on a silvertop zetec.

As for the sump, it needs shortening. From the top of the sump to the bottom needs to measure 6" all the way round, which also means you need to shorten the oil pick up pipe too. :)

From what the magazine said the black top's water pump turns the right way for a RWD conversion.

If the pump pulley has ribs it goes clockwise, if its smooth it runs off the back of the belt.

Escort silvertop zetecs have ribs so easy to triangle the belt, Mondeo silvertop zetecs go the other way and need a idle pulley... as do all the blacktops like this:

This is my blacktop installation. No need to change pumps, just run an idler.

With regard to the sump, Escorts have a shorter sump than a Mondeo and I was using a 1.8 Escort zetec in mine unmodified.

With the silver top (Mine) i need to run a pump that turns the opposite way?? why the need for the idler is that what you use to turn it the opposit way?

also is there a need to change the water rail?

The idler's there as that's where the powersteering pump used to be.

Which starter fits the 2 piece sump?

I've got a zetec one, but the bolt holes don't line up. I've tried a pinto one that came with my gearbox, but that's too big. :(

I wasa hoping it was going to be a straight swap engine out engine in?

does anybody know why you have to reverse the water pump and the need for a new water rail?

Sierra 1.8cvh starter motor is commonly used but you need to grind away some of the alloy of the two piece sump in order for it to fit.

Cheers mark. I've already ground the sump, thinking i'd make the pinto one fit, but didn't succeed.

It the cvh one a smaller diamater? And is there only one type for the 1.8 cvh? Don't want to end up with the wrong one again. Already got 2 useless ones :p

You're not, you're just keeping it spinning the same way as it's designed to work. If you removed the powersteering pump then just put a belt round the pullies that are left, it would spin the wrong way - putting an idler pulley in solves the problem. :)

Ahhhhh cheers for that. how do i got about an idler pulley ie what to do and what pulley to use? I've noticed Coozer's picture shows this (I think?)

Im assuming its smaller in diameter and thats why it fits. Ive personally never compared it to any other.

I think there is only one type for the 1.8cvh, and have been told many times by people who have done it thats what you need when using type 9 and zetec.

The idler in my pic came off the front of the Escort silvertop.

Starter motor on mine is off a DOHC Sierra, not sure what the part number is though....

Heres how much I ground off the blacktop sump:

so when i link it up to the tupe 9 i need a sierra starter?

do you have any dimensions for the braket you made to take pulley/ idler?

I made the idler just postion it so the belt got good contact round the other pulleys. You can put it anywhere really. If you look closely you can see the mole grips holding the belt? This was to get the length then down off to Halfords for the correct belt.

Here's my idler set up. Incase anyone reading this needs some inspiration. I just used some left over box section bolted to the oringinal engine mounting studs - Much easier than making a bracket that bolts onto the side of the block.
