What is it with those 5 min jobs ??
A good while back I bought a Suzuki Bandit silencer from ebay .... Got it for next to nowt as it had 2 of the 3 flange studs snapped off.
Thought at the time, how hard can that be to sort out.
Today I found out .... Very hard :D
Here's me thinking that they were splined studs ( Like wheel studs )
Turns out that they were dome headed studs & the best bit was, they were welded to the internal body of the silencer !!
Out came the slitting disk & cut the flange end of the silencer off
Once the alloy section was removed, I cut the internal flange off, ground the studs out, welded new ones on & finally welded the inner section back together.
That took me most of the day !!??
No wonder my build is taking so long :o
Tomorrows job is to TIG weld the alloy section back together.
I guess at the price I paid, it will be worthwhile.
David Murray was spot on when told me that it would not be a very straightforward job .... Good call mate :)

I,ve come across a few "5 minute jobs" that seem to take closer to 5 hours
But once they are completed I find its a very satisfying feeling of "smuggness" knowing that the end result looks good  ..........even tho it was a pain in the jacksie getting the job done
When I fitted my seat back panel........pre drilled all the rivet holes etc, thought to myself "Hmmm that looks quite smart" then began the job of rivetting it in place.....easy peasy 5 minute job ......by the time I,d finished it I was so knackered & had biceps like Popeye :D (air rivet gun now on shopping list )
Post up a photo of the finished article Ronnie

I went for 40mm Spacing. Seems more than solid with the sticky crap.. Have 2 extra rails for the seats though.

My riveter is not the lazy tongues type, it's got two long handles. When using it most of the effort went into putting the rivets in the riveter, it pops a 3.2 mm rivet in one motion.

A chuckle never even left my lips mate :D
Happen's to the best of us, me more so than most.
Cutting the end from the silencer yesterday was fun .... Must have munched into 4mm of alloy before it dawned on me that the flange part was hell of a lot thicker than I thought it was ( That'll teach me not to measure things ) :o
Oh well, just another weld to do

You weld ally brilliantly (hate you !!).Bought an AC/dc tig and destroying everything with it.
My tip for removing broken studs from car exhausts, slit the flange inline with stud and open it up slightly with thin chisel/screwdriver.
Putting studs on the inside is typical Japanese crazy logic.
Just sitting watching Mark Evans A Racing Car is Born, what a flakey loon !.

Sorry it was so much work Ronnie :p But at least you should be sorted soon.
When it comes to rivets I cheated and bought one of those cheap air hydraulic riveters :D

You called it spot on David, I was the one being a cheapskate & bought a bargain basement dammaged can :D
This is the can with the end removed

Had to cut the inner section off so as I could grind off the studs welded head.
Once the new studs were welded fast, it was just a matter of welding it back on.
Here's the alloy end section welded back on
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj266/Bonzoronnie/Banditcan2.jpg
Had a bit of a struggle as the alloy was anodised & very dirty.
Two welds to do, me being a complete muppet & made my first cut right into the full meat of the flange .... Doh
Should look reasonably presentable once linished up.
That can should do nicely until I can afford some bling :)
Turned out to be a very cheap part & only cost me some time ( Lots ) & a bit of gas.

I totally agree, Ronnie makes TIG welding appear easy and it really isn't that easy to do pretty :( .
Doncha just hate people who make quality work look so simple?
Only kiddin' Ronnie, ya know's we luvs ya really:D

The last time I welded ally was in the early seventies as an apprentice and the set was the size of a small car and water cooled 3 phase, even the HF set was the size of inverter machine's these days.
More practice !!!!

I guess all of those years of gas welding/brazing has a good deal to do with it .
Have also spent most of my working life ( Welding wise ) living in the shaddow of my little brother .... His hand is so steady, I could slap his face :D :D
Really wish that I lived a bit closer to some you guys, I would love to be able to help out :)

Tell you what .....if you were into motorcycle racing as I was, you would be in high demand doing repairs to expensive racing bikes with welding "that" good , wow
We kept falling off & needed quality repairs  :D
