When your mate gives you a load of sanding wheels that are just too big for your angle grinder, don't be tempted to take off the guard.

The injection hurts much more than the stitches!

Hope you are on the mend ok,
angle grinders are considered the 2nd most dangerous hand tool , the chainsaw is number 1.

hope it doesn,t slow down your build.

cheers

Your not the only one, I had a 9 inch grinder attack my thumb as there was no guard. Didn't hurt at all apart from the injection.

Cheers Andy

With a background in engineering I really should have known better.
Thing is I've just started a weeks hol and don't think the wife has owt for me to do;)

It's not too bad. Five stitches and a week on antibiotics. Bit painful but ain't going to slow me down. Well I say that but don't feel like I'm getting a lot done.

That said, angle grinders are amazing in their power and versatility. The Haynes Roadster Club might have a subtitle "Knights of the Angle Grinder" and a coat of arms with the crossed angle grinder and MIG goose neck gun.

Brilliant Albert I might use that one for a badge.
I have an air powered cutter that runs at 20,000 rpm and the guard is on it,its slipped on me once and went straight through the welding glove I had on at the time.

I also had an 8 in grinder disc burst on me,lucky I had a hat, gloves and full face mask on otherwise who knows if I would still be able to see.

There was guy at the last engineering firm I worked at who was using a 14" grinding wheel on the back stand (a very big linisher for those that don't know). He was told by the 5 people that passed him 'you will be better of using the 9" grinder to do that job. 15 mins later there was the mother of all bangs that shook the wooden walls and floor of the mes of the 'mess/grinding room. The whole workshop stopped an ran towards the grinding room to find 'Dim' standing hands shaking, work piece planted in the wall behind the back stand, machine still running with chunks of grinding wheel every where. How the bits of wheel missed his body mass is any one's guess but the bits of wheel are still in the plaster board to show the young lads who start there what can happen when you don't listen to those in the know.

Many years ago a mate of mine had a 9" grinder disc explode and bits hit him in the face, he did have a full face shield on but it still bust his jaw in four places and knocked his front teeth out and put him flat on his back. turned out it was a 110 volt machine but some dick had put a 13 amp plug on it so Fred plugged it into a 240V lead and bang, instead of 6000rpm it went up to something like 20,000 and exploded:eek: .

Engineering equipment is safe if handled correctly but it bites back big time if you abuse it!

I use a chainsaw for a living and an angle grinder in my spare time, no wonder my health insurance premium is so high:D

Everybody should listen to that premonition you get before you do something silly "this is going to hurt".
