I swear .... The one time Microsoft produces a product that doesn't suck .... It will be a Vacumn cleaner :D

Been having trouble with my beloved laptop recently, it has been randomly shutting itself down ( last couple of weeks, more frequently )

Now that can't be a good sign, can it ??!!

My Broadband connection has been getting slower & slower, I swear that the majority of the time, i'd be better off using a dial up connection !!

Having been booted out of the lounge for the festive period .... Er indoors not too impressed by my office area  ( Worse than my workshop ) !!??

Decided, rather than buy a new laptop I would treat my desktop to a wee upgrade.
Long story short, ended up building a new one ( May just as well bought that new laptop )

Thought I would finally rid myself of the dreaded Vista OS & got Windows 7 Pro.
After a good week of faffing about, I am now up & running again, that is more than can be said for my slow Broadband connection .... Still just as bad :(

Beside my jibe at Microsoft, I think I prefer Windows 7 but time will tell !!??

Anyhows, that's what has been keeping me busy for the last week or so .... Time to catch up on some of the recent posts methinks :)

You've got more patience than me Bonzo. My laptop started playing up while away at work .Re-booted it completely 3 times and it still played silly buggers so it got bounced off 3 walls then i jumped on it :D
Had to go out and buy a new one after that.

Must be something in the air getting at laptops then. Mine has had a dodgy screen backlight for a couple of years but just lately its been so flaky as to make the lappy unusable so its been relegated to workshop duty with an external 17" LCD monitor and a USB keyboard/touchpad. My DELL laptop that I got off Mighty Mouth at Stoneleigh which was destined for workshop duty has now become my main machine at home. Makes some sense as the best one which is now the workshop unit is more powerful but it also has Autodata on it as well as USB making it more convenient for diagnostics. I'm using it now stood in the workshop. I built an old tool roll cab up into a computer/diagnostics workstation and it works well now.

Good luck with it all Ronnie,

Used to be well into my computers but microsoft was beginning to really pee me off so for home used i purchased an iMac desktop and have never looked back. No trouble, much better operating software and very stable - no issues at all sofar. No good for games but that's what the xbox is for.

Ronnie delete windows off your old laptop and install this http://www.ubuntu.com/ totally free and mega stable

you can make a cd that lets you try it before you wipe windows off if your not sure

there is an alternative out there to microsoft you just have to look. :D

Now there's food for thought Ash.

Not too bad with the harware side of things but it is the software that bamboozles the heck out of me .... Got some great Cad software, not got the faintest clue how to use it though :o

The laptop is not that elederly & I am guessing that it has developed some sort of hardware fault ( Very rarely get a Blue screen )
One thing that puts me off from reformating the laptop is loosing the partiton that my manfacturers system restore disk uses to install the OEM software .... Guess I could allways whop a new hard drive in there , cheap as chips as they say.

Davy

Good point mate .... Windows 7 done a 64mb update yesterday, took half of the blooming afternoon !!

Ozzy

Too blooming heavy to play frisbee with, the though had crossed my mind though .... Computer abuse might not solve the problem but it makes you feel heck of a lot better :D

Great advice there, Ash!

On Ubuntu I use qcad for 2D drawings. It's quite useable, does the DXF format. For DWG, one can get a trial version of VariCAD for Linux...

Got to agree with Baz,Mr Gates is still copping money for all the cock ups in his software.

No point throwing the laptop anywhere, its a toughbook whatsit and it just laugh's at you and keeps working (slowly)must be the -5 in the garage.

My old puta finally died after 7 years sterling service running XP pro, it was built by a lad I know who worked at ebuyer and we did a deal on a chassis. I know have a laptop with windows 7 and after having used Vista on occasions can safely say win 7 is far better and doesn't slow the beast down like vista.

I have not had any issues running old programmes either, perhaps I have been lucky?

Well after four attempts to download ubuntu and three failed attempts to burn it to disc I give up and will stick with XP which works well enough for my needs anyway.

I have been using Linux for 15 years and Ubuntu is now my flavour of choice.

I run my web hosting service on it

I run my normal laptop on it

I run my TV recording on it ( Mythbuntu ) 3 tuners much better than Sky or FreeviewPlus

We run our work webserver on it.

No viruses, No Malware, no spy ware.

I still have my windows laptop but despite being twice as powerful as this one it's a pain to use..

I have an IMac and it's OSX is just a flavour of Linux.

Another approach.

Set up a basic windows XP.

Get vMware

then build a virtual machine in vMware and use that, get it set up nicely and then snapshot it. thenj if the system plays up just revert to the snapshot.
