R1 Exhaust Can

I bought an R1 can from ebay to use with my pinto but I'm having a few problems with the inlet pipe as its bent to fit under the bike.

The pipe has 2 bends in it and I've tried heating and bending (with a long bar) but havn't managed to budge it.

Can I cut the existing pipe off and weld a new pipe on (replace with mild). I've only got a mig and I don't want to go to the expense of changing wire/gas as I think the can is stainless. The weld will be hidden by an ally collar and I can paint to protect it but will it stick??

If not I'll have to get someone local to tig it for me.

Hope I'm not blabbering again.

I would cut the pipe as it comes out of the can, leaving a few inches to play with, cut 2 small cuts about 2-3 mm wide at 9 o'clock & 3 o'clock on it, then get a pipe that fits snugly inside that pipe, and use an exhaust clamp to clamp it all up lovely. I am sure stainless needs to be tigged, so this option is quick, and cheap as chips. If you want, car builder solutions do a stepped reducer, so you can attach the can to a bigger or a smaller pipe. I would use mild steel pipe & get a pipe bender from a tool hire shop to make your system suit the car. Don't forget to weld brackets on. You can get brackets for cans from motor world e.t.c and they wrap around the can, pinch up with a bolt, and have a bracket attached. Hope this helps !

The can already has a bracket on it (silver bit at the very edge of the bottom pic).

I was trying to find some cheap mandrel bends but can't seem to find anywhere now.

Ok, been searching about, if you type in mild steel exhaust bends into eBay, you will find loads of good stuff. Demon tweaks also do a few bits as well. If you get mild steel you can weld it all up apart from the rear can coupler !

You can mig stainless with normal wire but the weld will rust and the pipe wont. Not pretty but an answer to your problem.;)

Thanks fly, that is what I thought. Tbh if it lasts a couple of years I'd be happy.

got exactly the same can on mine and i had to weld it to put a flange on to connect the donors cat to ive welded the mild to the existing pipe no bother.:D

mounted mine upside down and attached it to the chassis via a rubber mount works so far !:D
