Does anyone here keep snakes by any chance?

I treated my wife to this little fella yesterday, and could probably do with some tips/advice on looking after him!

He's a King Thayers, tentatively called Rex.

I hope you're joking about him being mean
I had planned to get a corn... but ended up coming out with this little guy instead. Couldn't resist!

I've been doing loads of googling, but there's so much conflicting information posted online that I'm none the wiser
I'm most concerned with setting up the viv at the moment.
I got this starter set:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/KOMODO-U45102-Komodo-Snake-Starter/dp/B002UDXHMI
I've currently got the heat mat stuck to the bottom of the viv on the outside and I'm not sure if it's warm enough inside, even running full pelt without a thermostat.
The floor directly above the mat feels really quite toasty, but the air temperature doesn't seem to be going above 23 degrees. Is that a problem if the substrate is warm enough?
If I lay a thermometer on the substrate above the mat it's reading 30 degrees .

Not quite sure how much and how often I'm supposed to be feeding him either yet.
He was last fed on Saturday, so I guess I've got a few days to figure that one out.

And he wouldn't make much of a handbag, needs fattening up a bit first!

I was not joking:eek:

"king" in the snake world means Top dog, Uber reptile ,Big daddy, Wellard, etc
I think you get the picture

When this guy turns up for action then mambas ,rattlers or vipers are left holding his coat. When hes bigger any of the aforementioned will make a tasty snack before lunch and a python chaser:eek:

The mat is plenty warm enough forget the air above it because they cant fly.
Make sure there is room to move off the mat or climb up to cool off.
If you defrost a mouse and wave it about near the viv you will soon know whether hes hungry.

lol, I'd like to see him try to eat a python :D

Thanks for that Ajay. I thought it'd probably be ok, but thought it best to check before I cooked or froze him!
The mat only covers a 1/3 of the floor so cooling off shouldn't be a problem.

Admittedly they will eat other snakes given half a chance, but from what I've read he should be pretty docile.
