Been out with a mate today to the Kemble Extravagana - all things steam, car, bike, commercial, tractor etc etc (even picked up a Sierra Haynes manual for £2!) Took his 1970 MGB up so I drove it up and he drove back. On the way I've been winding him up saying that i'm now a classic car owner with my 22 year old Sierra!
But the question is really - when do cars become classics. I personally would actually say that the Sierra will be a proper classic in a few years as there won't be many left, but they are an important part of car in history.

good question that one as mine is classed as a classic even though it's a H plate... It's a 2wd 2.0ltr XR4i 4 door hatch back doodah and struggled to get normal insurance as it wasn't recognised. Had to go down the classic insurance route who do admit it exists....:D And yes it does say XR4i on the log book rather than just a daft sticker plopped on by someone pretending..

Hard question to answer is that one :)
DVLA once said that any car over 25 years old would be classed as a historic vehicle & Tax exempt
Then they done the sums & realized that it was going to end up costing them too much revenue
I believe that the Historic vehcle tax exemption was frozen at 1973, cars after this date would no longer become tax exempt
Depends on ones personal view of a classic car !!??
Mine
If a car remains popular & starts to get very difficult to obtain without paying a premium price. It could be said that it is becoming a classic.
Who would have thought the the Ford Escort Mk2 would become a classic car & worth a great deal more now than when it was new
