Absolutely nothing to do with my Roadster, well apart from the fact I have had to stop work on it for a moment :(

Junior has been having trouble with the gearbox in his Calibra recently, been moaning like an old lady for ages about his gearbox making funny noises.
Every time that I took it out for a run, it was as quiet as a church mouse !!??

He took the wife shopping the other night. When they came back, the wife said the car was making some horrible noises.
Once more I took it ot for a spin, once again not a squeak

He came home from work the next day, someone had stolen some of his gears, they only left 1st & 4th :D

No Calibra boxes about but after a bit of research I find the Vauxhall Cavalier used the same box in some models.

Whilst up the breakers today, the owner said the easiest way to do it, if the diff is ok, is to remove the gearbox endplate & pull the whole gear assembly out.
Went up the yard & found an F18 box the same. Removed the gear selector unit, undid the rear cover bolts, a few light taps with the copper hammer & a good tug.

I'll go to the foot of our stairs, the whole gear set pulls out with the endplate. Took less than an hour !!

Tonights task is going to be trying to fit it the same way in the Calibra. I can see that I may have a struggle to get all the shafts to line up at the far end of the gearbox housing

Never tried this approach before, going to be interesting that's for sure !!??

I'll keep you all posted with the end result .

I did ask someone this afternoon and they said the only difference in the two box's is that one was hydraulic and the other cable to operate the clutch.
As for ratio's it would depend on the application, diesel/ petrol etc.
Citroen and Peugeot have the same idea and both main and layshaft will come through the side of the box.
On the gear lever turret there is a small pin that locks in reverse if I remember rightly and its easier to get it back in place.

Well, it went a lot like this................Removed the gearbox section in double quick time.

When I started to separate the gearbox end plate, I placed an oil drain tray underneath to catch the oil, as it was draining I noticed a distinct metallic look to the oil as one would expect for a failed gearbox.

As I started to separate further, bits of metal started falling out " Oh dear, that don't look too clever " I said to junior.

Got the unit out & onto the floor. Quite a bit of gear damage. so far so good ;)

Had a look inside the gear casing..........Oh dear ( Words to that effect )
A nice shiney pinion gear from the diff, sticking through the gearbox casting.

It's a mystery how it was just about still driveable !!??

Oh well, back to the breakers for the rest of the gearbox. :D

I hate it when that happens - the funny thing is, I find it tends to happen much more in unfamiliar cars - like hire cars :p

Quite true.

Just to soft on the boys, that's my trouble !!??

I can remember my father telling me " You broke it, you fix it ", I guess that was the start of my lifelong interest in mechanics :o

Never ever broke a diff in my younger days, snapped a half shaft or Two though :D

Triumph Vitesse, dead easy  :D

Fully understand,My youngster (26) brought the car to me to service at work and after I had spent hours putting it right she goes straight over a tee junction just at the end of the runway at Newcastle down a 3ft embankment on to the front end and bent the lot. My comments are/were unprintable at the time.
Cost her £300 to put it right (yes I am the evil parent !)but I did the repairing.
