I recently replaced the clutch on a Mk5 Escort

1.8 Zetec

Came to me with the cluch slipping, I removed the gearbox, the friction plate was almost down to the rivets.

I renewed the whole lot with a QH Clutch kit.

As is quite common with Escort gearboxes, the cluch arm was partially siezed & was not moving freely.
This was overhauled & very lightly greased before being put back into the car.

The Escort has come back, again the clutch is slipping

I have no idea as to what could be wrong !!??

There is the right amount of freeplay in the cable
Defifnately no oil seals gone when I replaced the clutch.

One thing for sure...........I am not looking forward to removing that gearbox again

Have any of you folks come uppon this problem before ??

Any help would be most welcome :)

This may sound silly but is the driver a bit hard of hearing?, I work for the RAC & have been called to many cars that have clutches replaced regularly, often due to the drivers not being able to hear when they are riding the clutch. We recover them and low and behold a month or so later we recover them again!.... Dennis

Looks like the box is coming out again and no offence meant or intended Ronnie but I would not use QH for a pension and as Drury said I would bet one side is badly worn or the cover/diaphram is weak.

QH is often remanufactured and not new and the difference in cost is not that great compared with LUK/Sachs.

Thanks Paul :)

As luck would have it................ Just happen to have a LUK friction plate & cover from a 1.8 Zetec kicking about in the workshop. ;)

I also have the waranty reciept from my motor factor........They'll be getting a bit of grief if it turns out to be defective ( Well no harm trying ) :D

More to spend on Roadster,go for it .
We charge £45 an hour and steal loads of punters from the local Audi/VW stealers at that rate and £35 for diagnostic checks (Audi £106.00 +vat min)

The main stealers are something else

I have a very rare intermitent faut with my Mazda 6's immobilizer system. 3 or 4 times in the last five years it cuts out after starting. If it does it 3 times the engine is immobilized.
A simple battery dissconnect cures the problem.

My Mazda dealer wanted £120 +vat for a diagnostic check  .....My gut instict tells me that they would probably find out nowt unless it happens to be immobilised at the time !!??

Much cheaper to carry a 10mm spanner in the glovebox :D

Dont know about Mazda but putting the pos and neg together on audi's resets the defaults on the ECU and sometimes cures a lot of faults.
Diagnostic equipment is somtimes not good on jap stuff unless it is specific for it and generally for euro cars, deler level gear costs a fortune VAG VAS is £6,500.
