Dont know if there is one of theys threads on hear? if there is i could not find it and if not...

There are quite a few roadsters being built at the moment and it would be interesting to see where they are being built?

i have a single garage behind my house withe enough space for another car next to the garage taking up the remaining garden, much to my partners annoyance. i am also lucky enough to work in a steel fabrication place even if most of the machines are a fare bit older than me they do jobs so much quicker than i could.

I bought a house as it had a long drive and a crappy garage.

http://www.rob1tt.f2s.com/Images/oldgar.jpg

Note how there seems to be a bit of space around the back and far side.

Note the roof that the vendor put on to clinch the sale as the old one leaked ( the new one leaked even worse after 6 months :o

Who's nicked my garage!!!

http://www.rob1tt.f2s.com/Images/ggone.jpg

It took me about two weeks hard diging in rain wind and snow to get the ground ready for the base.

I then went to work on the 6th of may 2008 ( my birthday ) at 8am... And by mid day this had arrived in the space above..

It's currently got our MK1 golf in for a bit of work. Sadly it mainly seems to be used for breaking cars.. Granada, Sierra, Scorpio, Mk3 Golf is it's tally so far. And another MK1 golf is waiting its fate...

sounds like a good plan i could exchange digging for grub and goes in the roadster lol. nearly choked and cacked myself at the same time when i got the quote from readymix for the base. dogwood has already seen my plot for it, just gotta wangle him into loaning some heavy plant from his farm

bonzo i like the idea of free bbq. how many sausages and burgers are you bringing :D

in reality i will prob hire a mini digger for the weekend as the base needs to be 16inch deep 6inch hard core 1inch of sand then DPM then 9inch of concrete with steel mesh in the middle.

Bloomin heck Ash ................. You must be on some soft ground there

My workshop is built on an old Tin mine waste heap .............Just about solid Quartz !!??

Thinking about it.......That'll be why I am a bit dippy ..... With all that Radon gas & all that :D :D

I'll bing the bangers if you do the cooking mate ;)

Ash,

Are you sure. From a rough calculation your workshop base would be good for about 28tonnes.

Now my ‘thing’ is road construction, if the loading was to be a maximum of 8tonnes I would go for 150mm of WELL COMPACTED base layer then slipform (plastic sheeting) then 150mm of concrete with re-bar.

Just MHO.

dogwood thats what i need

ginge i have got 2 lathes at 1.5 tonne each and a 2.2 tonne mill going in there plus the roadster and what ever my next project is. there is also the chance that i might put an overhead H-beam crane in when i can afford it as i want to be able to lift whole cars up :D

oh and if you could borrow one of those diggers from Brompton for the weekend that would be great.

My workshop -- a half of a two car garage.

http://fridge.pov.lt/~alga/DSC_9074.jpg

BTW, Ash, the foundation is filled with ~50 cm of gravel and sand, covered with 10 cm of concrete reinforced with 100x100x4 wire mesh. Seems to be holding up just fine.

Here's mine:

http://www.tcodd.demon.co.uk/images/Roadster/Roadster+Garage.JPG

Looks neat(ish) from that angle as most of the mess is behind the camera, and I have to keep the sides of the build table clear or I can't get from one end of the car to the other.

Not too sure what I'm going to do once the suspension is on - garage is 2.3m wide and I think the Roadster comes out at about 1.8m which doesn't leave a lot of room to work.

same boat. part of me is dreading the hurdles once i have wheels on.

There is only 8 inches either side of my wheels when the roadster is in garage so you just have to roll it out everytime you want to work on it, which isnt so bad until it starts snowing!

I cant even put my nose cone on or it wont fit back in garage :(

I need to chop the cupboards out from under my work bench so the nose can underneath

I demolished my garage and built an extension in it's place, not the best way to start a kit car build, rented next doors garage until she sold the land it was on:(
Finished the build outside.
Now that it is all finished and on the road, i have just started renting a barn (with 2 other club members) with space for 10 cars:) best i start another car then.

Here's mine - roadster build area is where the sierra is, other side is my mates MG. Behind the camera is the toilet, sink, fridge, kettle etc and to the right of the camera is the small office we use as a machine shop / clean area. Not cheap to rent something like this but works out well shared between the two of us :)

How much does it cost to rent a space like that?

davidimurray
4th January 2010, 02:33 PM
Costs us Ģ200 a month with running water and electric. Last guy easily had 3 cars in there and if we took down the machine shop area we could easily get 5 if not 6 cars tight up against each other. The space makes things so much easier as you can get on with a number of jobs without tripping over stuff - is hard work trying to keep it tidy though!

Mine was built on the driveway. Far too much other stuff in the garage. I've since put a 12' x 10' shed in the garden to put it all in and the car now goes in the garage with about 4" to spare on either side.

Graham how wide is your garage, mine is 6 ft 8 inches and I didn't think I had enough room, your pic means it might be possible until the wheels go on.

Length is 5m max width 2.5m, narrowest width accross the two centre pillars is 2,25m. Enough room to get the car in and out with the wheels on but work space around the car makes working difficult.

We build a new garage for about five years itīs 8x9m and has a "upperfloor" there I can put stuff Iīm not using for the moment.
When the childrens are getting older maybe we fix a apartment on the upperfloor, our house itīs not so big so it could be a good idea..

Yes the smallest wheels I could find and I can lock them.
Itīs very easy to move it, if I work with the rear end I have like in the pics and I if I work with front I just twist it so I have the front against the bench.

But for the moment I canīt do so much.... I still wait for my sides:(
