I previously had a 1kg powder fire extinguisher that broke(when i dropped it) and about 3 months ago part of my chassis caught alight while welding as there was some petrol/oily stuff on it, and the hammerite didnt really help, i thought it would self extinguish at the time but i ended up having to get screw and push it in the hole where the fire extinguisher lever would go... at least it put the fir out. It wasnt a big fire but id rather it didnt spread at the time:o

today i saw on he internet a 6kg powder fire extinguisher at lidl for £16.99 (http://www.lidl.co.uk/cps/rde/xchg/lidl_uk/hs.xsl/index_11332.htm) so i just went and picked it up. its quite a bargin for a fire extinguisher(hope its not a piece of crap if its ever needed) but for those who dont have a fire extinguisher id take a price like this as quite an incentive to get one before its too late and some damage could be done...

I set my sapphire on fire when welding, they use foam to stop pannels humming and that caught light. I had to use good old fashioned h20 on that.

I salvaged 3 C02 units from our old building when it was shut so they are in the garage now just in case. Lot less messy than powder.

I "acquired" a large co2 one from a previous place of employment when made redundant ;)

its always at arms reach as i re-learn to weld

Having done fire training when I worked for the MOD and having set fire to a camper van I was welding, it was my own I hasten to add, I now have fire extinguishers all over the place but more importantly I know how to use them and which ones to use on different types of fires. I have a 2KG dry powder fastened on the drivers door step of my camper and a 2 KG AFFF foam job between the sliding door and passengers cab door. AFFF puts out most fires although it isn't great on mains electrical fires as the foam is water based so can conduct electricity:eek: but it doesn't stain upholstery so the clean up after a minor fire would be easier.

In the workshop I have a large CO2 by the fire exit and a large AFFF foam job by the main door and a 2KG dry powder by the office outside door.

The 6KG for £16.99 from Lidl is excellent value, if they've got any left next time I go that way I'll grab a couple.

I am a fire marshal at work, the CO2 will do for most things I want to tackle here at home. Anything else and I will probably be rushing for the Dog'n'Bone.

I keep finding vehicle fire extinguishers at work,:D don’t worry no vehicle goes out without one, so my garage has a few.

Cheers Ginge.

Just a little tip but if your welding with mig and using co2 then if anything catches fire point your nozzle at it and pull the trigger instant mini fire extinguisher, you can always turn the wire feed down and the gas reg up too saves running for water or proper extingusher and its free too.
