View Full Version : new build from france nissan turbo!

Hi, ive been on the forum for a few months now, well since buying "the book"
as ive wanted to do this for a while,
were out in france im english and my
brother in law will be helping me with this, as he happens to be an mecanical engineer and has just finished his scratch built ariel atom style track car

it will be built as a track car,

i wanted at least 200bhp
so i decided on a nissan 200sx for the donor , i really wanted a honda s2000 lump but that would blow the budget!



I bought my donor nissan,1 owner, totally standard with just over 80,000miles on the clock,

just had to pick it up!

which meant hooking up the trailer for a 1000mile round trip back to the uk, in less than a weekend, what a mission!

that done i couldn t wait to see how she run!
like a dream, goes really well sweet!
next ordered a chassis pack from talon , it arrived in france in a few days, briallant

The bro in law was excited and luckily was on holiday so he had it all pointed in the day, what a surprise when i turned up at the garage!

my job was to sort out the nissan , by the end of the day it was stripped, so we could start measuring!!

next is to finish the rest of the welding of the chassis
present the engine and then give it a strip down and a good service

then onto the suspension.

we are considering using the nissan hubs , but would it just be easier to go with sierra hubs?
my main concern is i really want 13" rims, is it possible?

You'd have to modify the rear upright design if you want to fit 13" wheels. The standard rear upright/wishbone barely fits into 14" pressed steel rims. You could theoretically achieve that by reusinng parts of the rear suspension of the donor.

Hi Mike

I have an electronic copy of the manual for the 200SXif you are interested. Use the Nissan hubs, then you can tell me how to do it as thats my prefered donor, although I wont be starting anytime soon. You will need to do a bit of redesign on the rear to accomodate the multilink suspension. Front hubs have the track rod ends in the correct position.

Good choice Mike,

We're currently building a car using the SR20 engine for a customer, but still using the Sierra diff and driveshafts.

Nice choice Mike....I too am going the CA18det route but staying with the sierra running gear from propshaft back have 2 engines but both have the usual big end knock so will be regrinding the best one, would be good to bear each other in mind during the build......2 minds are better than one although you are one up on me if you have already built an Atom but i did build a Nova in my youth. Good luck with the build and I will be watching closely

thanks for the positive comments, i think im going to go with sierra hubs as it wil be the simplist, but i will be using the 200sx diff, im going to try trial fitting the engine tomorrow evening, see how that goes!

little update,

spent a couple of hours trial fitting the engine and gearbox, fits pretty well, just wondering how much room do i have above the chassis for the engine? also where is about right for the gearlever to come out? and how far does your guys sump sit below the chassis?

Some nice work there :cool:

Most gear levers sit approx 6cm behind TT5, tho this is usually dictated by the reverse light switch on the type 9 box, but as you are not using that box I,m not sure of the position of your gear lever.

My own engine sump is 25mm below the bottom of the chassis, & if i remember correctly ( car not at home) there is 17cm above the top chassis rail to the underside of the bonnet where it meets the scuttle, tho I,ll double check that measurement for you tomorrow.

havent updated for ages!

weve been busy building,
so far the chassis is all welded up , built the wishbones mocked up the engine and gearbox , had the prop shortened.
Made a sweet full rollcage same as the plans on the forum i found, will get some photos up this weekend!
last weekend we painted the rollcage and chassis, its looking good!
got to paint the wishbones and uprights tomorrow.
Hopefully be fitting the aly floor this weekend just waiting for a mate to deliver the sheet.

Yesterday we recieved our long awaited package, inside was the following;

Front 283mm Midilite kit , inc pads, x-drilled and grooved disks.

Rear Dynapro with 257mm disc., pads x-drilled and grooved.

These are a new conversion, even lighter 2 pot rear wilwood calipers:cool:

GRP seats
TRS harnesses
RMD Wheels in black
Polybush set
Mushrooms
protech shockers and springs

i will get some photos up cause the brake kits are awesome!

weve fitted an obp pedal box fitted with wilwood master cylinders, so im hopeing that should sort out the braking!
Im a late braker :D

next week we should recieve the bodykit from saturn:cool:

were getting there;)

update time

im fitting the bodywork at the moment , its coming along nicely,i was abit nervous cutting it about though!

Been doing my side pannels too.. I had to trim the lower lip as it was not passing the floor.

yes, mine was a tight fit too. Im now on the rear wings , but try as i might i cant line them up proberly (see other post!)
