I've just turned the up-right bushes using the plans published on the forum.

So a big thanks to the member that made the plans available.
I've just got to machine the tapers, I've calculated the taper angle at 2.9 degrees, my intent is to test this on an offcut using the ball joint taper as a plug gauge.(that is when it arrives) That is unless someone knows a better way of getting the right taper?
cheers Trif

No trail and error is pretty much it, I'd say have a go on some scrap first then try your luck on your finished parts. Good luck.

they sell the correct reamer in the axminster catalogue, i think theres another thread on here someware about this saying how deep to ream them, but i just reamed them out till the top of the taper was deep enought to get a full nut plus 2 threads on, cheers

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong ....but I think the taper in the mushrooms is not the same as in the hub carrier... hence the axminster reamer will be no good ....I machined mine with 3 degrees of taper and checked with a tranny drag link and found it had made good contact throughout the taper (tell tale contact lines)

Did mine with same reamer and no probs.
Some have mentioned that mushroom holes have not been deep enough for the ball joint taper to give enough thread .

I haven't as yet got the top ball joint, but I assumed that since it's sourced from a transit and the bottom is a maxi they must be different tapers.

May I ask who mentioned it and where the mushrooms came from? I've had no direct complaints so am not aware of any problems with the ones we've produced for the group buy.

I am somewhat confused Trif.....you say you have just "turned" the upright bushes.... which ones are these? the axminster reamer as I understand is to ream the hole in the hub carrier for the maxi ball joint and the mushrooms are for the tranny drag link in the top ball joint......please explain or have I missed something major:confused:

Sorry what I meant was that I have turned them on my lathe and I was ready to machine the taper. I had realised that the tapers were possibly not the same (Maxi - Transit) and I was just seeking a bit of reassurance that the method that I was planning to use to make the taper was OK in case I spoilt 2hrs work. Sorry for the confusion

Its not fair to post who's mushroom adapters I have and there is no way I will get involved in purile childish arguments, suffice to say that they were made to a spec impeccably and as stated previously not yours Phil and other users have mentioned adjustments have had to be made with regard to taper depth and the reamer used was for the lower ball joint in the hub.

Good building one and all.

Oops, clang, the penny drops. Just prior to starting this thread I had pm’ed jimmyd about some pedal BUSH material that he had kindly given me FOC. Immediately following that I wrote the original question and got my wucking mords fuddled, call it a senior moment. After the reply from Talonmotorsports had answered my question and confirmed that I was on the right lines I failed to re-read my original submission to spot my mistake. So a very big sorry to K4KEV for causing you confusion. Thanks to flyerncle for making it clear to me. By the way flyerncle you might smoke the mushrooms, I come for Shropshire and down here we bake them into cakes then you don’t have to dry them first!
A sincere thanks to all that contributed to the thread, now I’m off to turn the tapers in those “whatchmacallits thingymabobs”. Did I mention that I make my own bushes!
