Just opened the post this morning and received the attached letter from our GRP products supplier. Couldn't believe so checked it out and its all correct. If you cant read the letter it basically says that the EU has decided to increase duty by 43.6% on all imported fibreglass products from China, making the total duty 50.6% therefore adding 39% onto all our grp products.....
Apparently these increases are to favouritise European manufactures of which we don't have any, just distributors.
We've had a good long think and believe we can take the extra cost by buying our own weighing and mixing tools for mixing our own coloured gel coats, therefore only having to buy clear gel and the relevant pigment. Should save costs on the gel equivalent to the extra increase in material costs.

FFS, how do they expect businesses to operate when they are being levied so heavily.
Good luck ...

Your banana must not be to the eu standard !
Yes they are annoying so n so's am i the only one who does not see any benefit from being in the eu the cons seem to outweigh the pro's by alot
On a positive note surely mixing your own colours will allow more personal touches and more individual roadsters ( colourwise) and another string in your bow ;)

It is Rob, but the pigment are to the same RAL numbers and colours as the GEL colours but we may be able to get a bigger range of colours - will look into it more.

That is a bleeding outrage Andy
You are going to have to do really well to absorb a price hike like that.
Nice to know that you are going to go the extra mile in order to do so :) :)
Gonna hurt all of or local boat builders, that's for sure.
Just had my latest BOC price list .... New EEC reg's are being cited as part of the reasons behind their price increases

That's ridiculous!
Looks like Saturn will have to setup a fibreglass manufacturing centre in India and then ship all the bodywork over to the uk :p

I can see the logic behind it, having seen so much production go the far east due to costs that some industries have almost become extinct. However this only works if there is an industry to protect, if there is only a distribution network, then it just looks like another way of generating more money.
Kind regards
John

I believe you have just hit the nail on the head there John - Generate more money loosely under the disguise of protecting european manufacturing. The only industries left are cottage ones like ours who pay through the nose for it....

That sucks big time! I don't see how they can get away with it. Make sure you stock up big time before 18th Oct. Gives you chance to get all your bits sorted for mixing your own. :o

I know nothing about the technical side of Fibreglass, is it possible to buy direct and stuff the E.U. barstewards.
Good luck

Cheers Mike,
You could set up an import licence but you would have to buy by the container load and still pay all the import duties relevant to the product. Just couldn't believe when we opened the letter, normally get 2 or 3 letters a month from GRPMS informing us of price changes but nothing like that.
Most of the cost of grp is in the labour cost so will be able to absorb most of cost hike in mixing our own gel coat.
Cheers...AndyH

My company is unfortunately forced to buy from the far east, and i will say that 90% of the items we buy are absolute crap. I wish we could have had this levy introduced 10 to 15 years ago. Far east pollution levels are shocking. You may not like EU meddling in some things, but the amount of damage thats being done unchecked is nothing to what our worst polluters do in the western world.
It is a shame that it all comes down to money, but you do get what you pay for. I honestly hope that manufacturing in the far east gets hit and hit hard. That's what has happened here. I'm in manufacturing / engineering and it saddens me every time I have to order cheaper inferior parts instead of quality (and I must admit, more expensive) UK made parts.
So, yes I feel your pain about this levy, I will feel it too as we buy GRP parts and I would guess about 50x more volume than you do. But hopefully in a couple of years the tide will turn. Chin up.

What really hurts is people get of their backsides, invest time and money to make a buisness work and some faceless over paid R Sole decides to make a name for themselves by dreaming up yet another foooking tax.
Next they will take all our money in tax and give us pocket money (and then tax it) Bunch of 5hites.

we are already taxed twice, theres not much that is not VAT levied.. May as well take it of income  .
Still perhaps the Liberals proposed £10K tax free band will help the country....

I think you're quite right Balidey, but it has certainly come far too late now that, UK in particular, has lost pretty much all of its manufacturing facilities and would cost a fortune to rebuild infrastructure upto the 21st century. Its just a big hit to take for everyone associated with grp products.
It seems that people in power have no imagination and the only way to deal with problems like this is with heavy taxing, maybe its just a way to raise more revenue as they know that we have no alternative for supply.

i totally agree with the above, but what/who will they tax when everything has gone due to them robbing everyone and their Granny.
Think about this TT,there is tax upon tax upon tax.
Gas Oil from a distributor has 5 % tax on it,if you sell it at a garage there is 17.5 % tax on it who is taking the pi55 out of who.
Mot test,if you invoice a test at more than you paid for it then there is liability for vat on the difference.
