Huge rises in car insurance premiums seem to be hot news lately !!??
Juniors car insurance policy is due for renewal in 2 weeks.
His renewal documents dropped through the letter box the other day
Sure enough, the renewal premium has risen from last years £460 to a whopping £610 & that's after another year without a claim !!
Since last year, Junior has chaged his car .... Gone from a 1995 2 litre Vauxhall Calibra down to a 1999 1.6 Hyundai Coupe
Junior, aged 22, full licence for 4 years, 4 years NCD, no accidents or convictions.
well, spent a day on the insurance web sites filling out endless quotes .... Deep joy .... Got the premium down to £285 fully comp ( Last years was 3rd party f&T )
Junior has been with the same company for 3 years .... I guess you get shafted for being a loyal customer !!??
Best price I got was Swift Cover, via Confused.com
The only downside is a quite high policy excess but that's about parr for the under 25's
Biggest shock of all .... For the first time ever, adding myself as a named driver did bring the premium down from £307 :D

My step son 24 with 1 yrs ncb drives a 1999 1.6 fiesta zetec and pays about £1600 fully comp. If I put the same engine in a roaster and only insure it in his name fully comp £380.

I saved £70 with swift cover by adding my wife as a named driver and she can't even drive. She only has a provisional.

My premium dropped £213 this year round on my renewal, i managed to haggle down an extra £30 and free breakdown cover for the year.
A pleasant surprise when it dropped through the door!

currently its £370 fully comp on Bike engine car at age 21 with sure term direct, not bad I thought
hopefully they don't try and shaft me on my renewal or i will be looking else where
kinda ironic that my 1.3 van is over a grand to insure
ahh well that is life i guess

I guess the whole car insurance pricing structure is a huge lottery with a great big dollop of mystery thrown into the mix !!??
When I bought my Jeep grand cherokee last year, I had to go shopping for a new policy as I wanted Junior to be a named driver .... Saga's old duffers policy will not cover any driver under 25.
Cover for myself only, started a £191, fully comp .... As soon as I added Junior as a named driver, quotes of £800 - £900 were about the norm
I finaly found a link to a West country broker, ended up paying £295 fully comp with Junior as a named driver ( Liverpool/\Victoria policy )
Bit their arm off PDQ at that price ;)
No prizes for guessing which vehicle Junior chooses to drive when he gets the chance :D
Makes me wonder if sometimes you just catch an insurance company in the midst of a sales drive for new customers !!??

now after shopping around and having my premiums double i was surprised when my renewal hit the doorstep with no change, apart from im covered to drive other vehicles now third party. (sore point from last year )
alfa romeo 147 1.6 me (with a £26,000 claim 2008) and the mrs minor bump in 07 fully comp came out at £350 or thereabouts.
bike renewal was a gem . last year after wanting to change from tpf+t to full comp with bennets. tpf+t premium was £320 but id almost paid in full i was told to cancel i had to pay £190 then take out the fully comp policy of £945  so over a grand !
luckily i swapped my bennets policy to an old 50cc i have kicking around and they owed me money !!! even after the admin fee £75 rebate !
new policy with ducati insurance uk came in lower than the tpf+t with bennets at £305 for fully comp cover and now after a year
renewal £144 :D
the thing is finding a good broker it seems the go checkout the moonpig dot coms all seem to keep the premiums high and nine times out of ten your cover bought online isnt worth the paper its written on if it comes to a claim.

This has been talked about before, its a shame that the decent younger drivers have to pay for the drugged up cretins driving round in their corsas causing mayhem.
A friend recently tried to insure his 17 year old who has recently passed his test and was quoted anywhere between 3,000 and 8,000 to insure him fully comp.
Soapbox.
Something needs to be done to discourage them from being tossers, something fitting like a five year ban if they get one point in the first three years of driving and this info passed to insurers as its all to easy not to inform them of prosecutions.
Rant over.

They should have a razor sharp 8 inch spike mounted from the centre of the steering wheel pointing towards their face  :D
Im sure they would take it easy then!!

Hows about, self exploding seats if the vehicle detects any force over 2G :D :D
I agree with you Paul .... How the hell are youngsters suposed to get mobile with such crazy insurance premiums
Living in such a rural area as we do, If junior got no transport, he's got no realistic chance of decent work.

Had renewal policy through recently for both cars
3.8 litre v6 mitsubishi comp for anyone over 25 to drive $486.
1.6 litre hyundai comp for anyone over 25 to drive $431
Made her majesty phone around and got the 1.6 down to $305,much better as its only used occasionally as a second car.
Always worth phoning around i have found as they normally have introductory offers to get your business and even phoning your insurance company to see why the increase and can they match the new quote you have.

Something else you can try to get even more money off is going through a website like Quidco.
I know that swiftcover are on there and you could get £30 - ish back on top.
You might have to wait a couple of months for the money to find its way back to you, but worth it in the end.
The thing about insurance that annoys me is if you have more than one car you have to build up seperate no-claims bonus ..... makes no sense to me other than to make more money for the insurance company!!

If you have more than one car ask if they do a Fleet policy where they are all covered under the one set of no claims. Some companies here do and some dont but until you ask you wont know.

My old camper is fully comp with euro recovery and breakdown cover for a mere £270 so worry free motoring as I know I will get home if the old geeza has a mishap.....oh and that's an agreed value with 2 grand's worth of camping equipment cover.......

The decent ones unfortunately suffer for the little plonkers Ronnie.
What about this, Banned 12 months for dangerous driving, coke habit, now driving 60 reg 200 bhp Renault on fathers trade policy and insurance company not informed of ban. Father and son are first class tossers.
A good case for some interaction between court, police and insurance companys and maybe insurance would be cheaper as I am fairly sure a large percentage goes to the motor insurers bureau to pay for uninsured losses like the clown above caused when he hit 4 cars.

Why do they not limit young drivers to 1200cc for 2years or something like that. They do it with motorbikes!!

In the states parents can put cameras in the kids cars to see how they are driving for piece of mind and insurance reasons. This can also be connected to a real time GPS tracking system.
