View Full Version : My Attempt at Engine Turning

During the last week of work before Christmas I attempted to have a go at Engine turning.
I ordered the CBS Catalogue and in the back it had a bit on engine turning using an engine Valve with some abrasive material and a pillar drill.
I used a 35mm Valve my mate got me from an old astra keyed the head with a grinder and punched out a peice of scotchbrite and stuck it to the valve using evo-stick.
I Placed the valve in the miller set at minimum speed, set the stop so onlt the scotchbrite hit the aluminium not the valve.
I did the fist "swirl" and nothing went "Twang" Bonus so far so good.
I then moved the bed 17.5mm then a swirl so on and so on the for the second run i went back to the start minus 17.5mm so they over lap and down 17.5mm.
Here are some pics to explain it better:

It is well worth a go.

Just make sure your not tempted to use that as a dash covering, when the sun hits it the road in front of you will disappear in a blinding light. The same can be said about using chrome bowled head lights.

I intend to use it for a part of the dash.
Below is a mock up of my final design (I Know the gauges are not level its only masking tape holding them in place).

The picture below is the car I liked the idea of having "Layers".

But thank you for pointing that out, my mate had a Robin Hood and when the polished stainless bonnet was up we looked as we could see smoke and it had burned a hole in the top of his seat, it goes to show how hot things get.

Looks fine Dean and probably good around the three gauges.

Thats really cool. Havent seen that finish on ali for years, we used to use a finish like that on our old motor bike brackets. No such thing as scotchbrite then we used valve grinding paste on a stick in the pillar drill:o

A bloke in work said that he use to use grinding paste.
I'm still wondering how well it will last as it is only aluminium.
Thank you for your feedback.

It was easy to stay warm on this job, but sunglasses were a must!

If you use plastic primer/adhesion promoter and laquer when its dry this should stop oxidation and staining.

I was not sure how to go about it as i thought to laquer something ideally it needs to be keed (I'm not sure how you spell it). I wonder if the turning would act as a keed surface.

I think your ok. jap bike engine cases were always highly polished then laquered. A bloke that redid some of my cases used to give the cases a quick wipe down with etch primer thinners then laquer them straight away. That always lasted yonks without peeling . Things have moved on and stuff like this http://www.duplicolor.com/products/adhesionPromoter/ is about which must be better. Dont worry about the spelling.
