View Full Version : Hard few weeks for me

The clutch recently packed up on Juniors Sierra.

We decided that it was not worth spending £90 odd on a new clutch kit as I was planning to change the 1.6 Pinto for the near completed 2.1 Pinto sitting in the workshop.

Giving the matter some thought, we got to thinking that the running cost of a 2.1 running a fast road cam & twin Webber 45's was going to be a no goer now that he drives a fair distance to work every day (Given the current cost of petrol ).

Simples I thought, why not drag the 2 litre twinky engine out of the scrap Sierra sitting on the drive.

Well that simple task has taken me over 3 weeks :o
Only been able to work on it an hour or Two most days.

Got the car back on the road yesterday.

Quite a straight forward job to do, I must admit, nearly gave up after hooking up the ECU & engine loom.
There was a total lack of action from the fuel pump, just didn't want to work at all.

Soon found out that the fuse box needed 2 additional relays, pump still wouldn't prime though.

Gave up looking for the fault in the end, the workshop manuals wiring diagrams are next to useless.:(
Ended up wiring up a new relay from a switched feed straight to the in tank pump.
Not ideal, I know but the car is now running real sweet.

Will add tracing that fault to my " To do one day " list. :D

what year was the donor and patient for diagram reference...

you need the REAL ford diagrams not the ones from over the counter books. ( although the early editions use reproductions of some of the original diagrams, it does not cover any MK2 stuff )

There are 6-7 versions of the Haynes sierra manual.

Sorry Rob, the rubbing strips went to the scrappy :(

Junior didn't want them & I am fast running out of storage space as I still have another full car to strip down.
Don't think Junior wants those ones as they are the earlier type with the Silver piping.

Juniors car was a 1.6 Pinto Sapphire ( Azura ) Date of registration: 12/02/1993

The Engine, gearbox, fuel tank, ECU & ECU loom + engine loom came from the following doner.
Sirerra Sapphire GLSI ( Twinky engine ) no cat fitted.
First registered: 01/08/1992

The fuel pumps live feed wire in the boot is Black/Red, this Black/Red wire is also in the main loom multi connector in the rear slam panel of Juniors car.

There is a Black/Red wire in the engine bay bulk head ( In one of the 3 engine management muliti connectors )
This wire is present in the cars main loom ( Engine bay ) but is not picked up at the management side of the plug.
Tested the wire at the plug & there is no continuity at the other end in the boot ( This is assuming that this is the fuel pump feed wire !? )

The ECU has a Yellow relay protected buy a fuse ( I assume this is the fuel pump relay ) The heavy cables are Green/Black.
This is the wire that is now feeding the fuel pump as it is only live when the ignition is on.

Obviously not ideal to have the pump running at full tilt as soon as the ignition is turned on.
Would love to get the fuel system to prime as it should.

Car is running like a dream, a total transformation from that tired old 1.6 Pinto engine.

Got to sort out engine change with DVLA now, that'll probably be real fun.

BOB

That Reciprocating saw I bought recently certainly made quick work of the body shell, way better than a nasty old angry grinder.

Definitely removed any last traces of newness :)

Look behind the drivers side trim kick pannel and you should find a 2 pin multiplug. Grey IIRC.

This usualy plugs into the inertia switch.
