Selling whats not used

Hi folks I'm hoping to have all the bits I want off my Sierra donor sometime this week. Just wondering what people have managed to sell from what is left and how much effort is needed to get the stuff sold.

Can't decide if the time to strip everything will meet the relevant financial return or if its just worth calling in the best offer from a scrappy. I am self employed so I need to return more from stripping the car than I would earn for the same number of hours work.

So what do you think I could get back for the "leftovers" ?

I have a fairly complete sierra and I cant give it away!

So far got £50 back from trim bits, boot lid and a rear bumper and more that Im being asked for, loads more that I could sell of it too, some people have been asking for the most obscure things that I wouldnt of given a second thought to.

It took about 6 month to get rid of the majority of it on Ebay, strippin it only took a few days and the bits just sat under the bench until someone purchased it!

And the bonus is I got everything I wanted for my build like the LSD, engine, loom, sterring column, handbrake etc for free!

But you live one the IOW and the cost of the Ferry, Trailer, Tow Fuel , Etc make it unviable to sell a non roadworthy car as a whole entity..

Takes time some time to shift some parts but usualy make back much more than the worth of the car.

Yea its not easy, had a call about it yesterday.
Cant seem to shift it over here though. Loads of sierras cos of all the old people and loads of Ford enthusiasts as well as kit cars.

Sold an indicator lens to a nice old boy on sunday who has his mot this week but some yob had vandalised the car, thats another quid :D

What was wrong with the mk1's to need breaking?

1 was 4 years ago, I was moving house. Was worth more in parts..
1 was last year, it was a bitsa, worth a lot more in parts as it had a Peugot MI16 engine in it!! And the sills and rear beam mounts were shot, and the engine needed a bottom end rebuild.

I will regret it one day, but the second car made way for my TwinTurbo XR4x4 Project.

Can you still go down the route of sourcing just parts rather than a complete donor? Or have the rules changed?

If you have a complete donor, with v5, or you buy a 'package' from someone whos broken a car, which includes chassis plates and documents then you can get an age related plate.
If you source everything separatly then the car will get a Q plate. Though this may be better if you have a specific criteria for the car particularly the engine and gear box.
I Ideally wanted a pinto and rear drum brakes. Ended up with a 2.0 DOHC and discs all round but that was all that was available so I bought it and was going to make it work. Also if you want a bike engine then it may save you space and hassle by not buying a donor car unless you dont fancy a Q plate.

If nowt has really changed then i would opt for just getting parts rather than a whole car as not so much hassle....q plate better anyway as I'm sure MOT man has to resort to different regs when testing or maybe that's changed too?

As long as you have a V5 and 3 major parts you can get your age related parts. Major parts being, say, engine / gearbox / diff - the only part they can really cross reference though is the engine number against the V5 and the DVLA inspector isn't usually the brightest spark. It will cost a lot more though going for individual parts as sellers know that we need the sierra parts.

So if you end up with a Q plate and come MOT time do they still revert back to 1975 regs...ie visual smoke test rather than a pipe up the exhaust doodah?.

I'm going the 3 wheeled route anyway as a lot less hassle test wise and no call for reverse unless you really want to...;)

Sadly not. Since the SVA / IVA was introduced, they set the engine emissions for your test as post 1994 (CAT test) as default, unless you can prove your engine is older than 1994. The issuing of a Q plate is done by the DVLA and doesn't affect the emissions decision made by VOSA. Only older Q plates (prior to SVA / IVA) are visual smoke test only.
