Hi guys,

I built a transporter trailer for my car last year (haven't actually used it yet) out of an old caravan chassis. It's single axle, if anyone wants to take a peek the build blog is here... http://www.locostcartrailer.blogspot.com/

Anyways, the old caravan tyres are cracked and old and need replacing. Do I need to fit tyres with reinforced sidewalls? or will car tyres do?

The trailer weighs about 180kg, car weighs (guesstimate) about 750kg so rounding up to be on safe side, about 1000kg load between the 2 wheels.

Answers on a postcard...

8 ply tyres from a van marked 120/? (cant remember what the other number is)are rated for comercial use up to 3500kg for MOT purposes.
And yes they are reinforced.

Ok, any ideas what car tyres are rated at? (on average)

I'm guessing reinforced van tyres are going to be expensive

Tyres are marked with a max weight rating , try this: http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/load-and-speed-indexes-advice.html also try trailer tyres on the bay. HTH. :)

Proper trailer tyres are much cheaper than car tyres. They are usually either 10 or 13 inch, you can get them in 4 or 8 ply if I remember correctly. I was going to go this way too but have since found a man with a pucker car transporter that will take me to and from IVA for less than the price of a tow bar. I will still have a look at you blog in case I change my mind.

I use 8 ply van tyres on my LDV van, the last pair I bought were £35 each & included new valve & balanced, so not too bad, seem to last ages too.

cheers
