Hi all, i've been bitten by the "Kit" car bug - badly. Went for a drive a year or so ago in a few of these, mainly Westfields, and it was an unbelievable experience. So i've been looking around at how to get one built and registered on the roads here in Australia. Things have been going pretty slowly up till this year as the criteria and the red tape to get it all done was astonomical - and frankly ridiculous.
But in a turn for the better, it looks like the authorities have given a bit of thought to the whole thing and the requirements for an ICV (Individually Constructed Vehicle) have been ironed out. So now we have to get an engineer to sign off on every aspect of the build, have a twist and torsion test of the chassis, pass all the ADR (Australian Design Rules) and then pass an emissions test called an IM240.
It's still a hell of a lot of work to go though, but it is slightly better than what was on the cards last year.
So my plans for the car will be
- standard book chassis
- MX-5 front hubs
- Toyota Hilux live rear diff
- SR20DE (thats the non turbo one) with a 5 speed gearbox from an S13 Sylvia
Sounds basic to some, but WOW it's heaps of work and design going into this thing. I've got a folio starting to come together with justifications of designs and materials, and an answer to all the ADR's that have to be met. Can't wait to start the actual build part of the job. Going to be a hoot.
