Spigot bearing removal

I'm currently trying to remove the spigot bearing from my 1.8 silvertop zetec engine to replace it with the sierra spigot bearing. However I am having some difficulty in removing it. I have tried the molly grease method, of packing the crank with grease and getting something which fits tightly into the bearing and give it a good hard whack to try and force the bearing out. But the grease just seems to ooze out of the sides.

I am trying to use a 3/8" breaker bar as the ground bar as it fits nicely and I have nothing else that will fit.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what im doing wrong or any other methods that are proven to work? I dont have access to a bearing puller, but would be willing to buy one if they are cheap enough. Does anyone have any recommendations for a bearing puller?

An old trick was to use grease and an old first motion shaft that was the exact diameter as that was where it was meant to fit in the first place,try using something gooier like Plastacine as grease is probably not viscous enough.

Blind hole pullers also do the same trick.

plain bearing types can be removed by tapping and screwing a bolt in then pulling on that

you need a real tight fit for the grease trick

if you have a slide hammer it is possible to make a steped pin/top hat shape to hook onto the bearing then wedge it in the hole by packing somthing down the side of it

other ways is to weld somthing to it and pull on that

got some taperd races out once buy welding a bead around the inside letting it cool and it shrinks it and just pulled it out by hand :)

Hi, you could weld a nut in it and wind a bolt in to pull it out.
we used to cut them in half with a chissel to get them out but its a bit brutal.

Well I managed to get the spigot bearing out today using the bearing pullers from work. It was still a bitch to do and ended up ripping the inner race out by accident, but that gave me a nice lip to get the bearing puller onto meaning it came out easily after that.

The new one is now fitted and I just need to borrow a torque wrench from a work mate and buy some clutch + bell housing bolts and I'll be ready to install my engine!
