View Full Version : Thinking aloud (Suspension bolts)

Had a break from the workshop over the last few days, feeling a little run down so it's time to recharge my batteries :o

You may have read about me building a new chassis using the HandyAndy flatpack kit :cool:

Being as I wish to keep my old Roadster as intact as possible ( Fully rolling at a minnimum )

I have got to thinking that it will be soon be time to turn my thoughts into finding some more suspension bolts for the second build !!

Now, thinking aloud here

I know that we have had quite a few new builds that have been started recently & would like to gauge if there would be any interest in a new group buy of bolts !!??

Having given my first group buy of fixings a little more thought, In hindsight, I could have put together a more comprehensive list of fixings without adding a huge amount to the final cost !!

I won't put any numbers here but this is the sort of thing I mean

Full suspension bolts, including the long diff mounting & rear upright mounting bolts.

Fixings for mounting the diff plates

Fixings for mounting the steering column

Fixings for mounting the solid alloy steering rack clamps

Fixings for the front mushroom adapter pinch bolts ( I belive they need to be longer than the Ford originals, as they also hold the front wing stays )

High tensile, M8 button head set screws for mounting the roll bar

Rather than including 60 M12 plastic nut covers ( Quite a few would go un-used )
A selection pack of , M12, M10, M8 plastic nut covers !!

Also an ouside possiblity of including a selection of sealed pop rivets ?


There are probably also a few other fixings I have not though of !!??

Feel free to voice your interest & any comments of fixings that you would like to see included in a more comprehensive fixing kit :)

I know that David has a current group by on the go but there were a few folk who may have been too late for that particular group buy.

Once I have gauged the potential interest & have reached some sort of uniform consensus of what fixings shoud be included, I will get some prices together ;)

I think it's a great idea Ronnie, for new comers and also builders further down the line.
I know I still need to get rivets and some nice bolts for the roll bar plates.

I'm sure there will be lots of interest.

I would be interested in the rollbar bolts and the pinch bolts ronnie.

I think you may be trying to make it too compilicated as not every body ends up building every part the same way?
Why not offer the suspension bolts as a group buy which is avery good deal on it's own, and the rest as an optional extra?
Just my 2 penith worth feel free to ignore me.

I am just going by personal experience but yes, a rivet pack may just be one step too far !!

I have quite a large range of assorted fixings at my disposal .... But for the life of me, could I find the right fixings when it came to bolting my diff plates & steering column on .... No not on your nelly & ended up using M12X40 set bolts as a temporary measure.

The same thing happend when it came to looking for some large flat washers ( The penny type ), every size here but M12 :rolleyes:

Bolts are so,so much cheaper when bought in bulk & it would be wise to look at the main bolts that an average build would definately need at some point !!??

All about saving a few pennies for mysef & helping others in the process :cool::)

I must be one lucky chap, I live within 1/4 mile of a good engineering suppliers that have supplied virtually every nut and bolt on my car, all good quality, I use 8.8 or better. 99% of purchases have been discounted for Cash.

I guess for those with out the same type of local store this is a very good idea Ronnie.

I also have several lage fixing suppliers nearby, after all we have quite a tradition for marine engineering in these parts ;)

When I organised the first group buy, I went round to them all armed with the best online quote I had .

The biggest of the companies ( Part of a national chain ) Claimed that they could net even buy the fixings in for the same price that I had been quoted !!?? ( Me, I didn't believe a word of it ) :confused:

In these parts an offer of cash payment means nowt .... They prefer account holders so as they can screw you with their inflated pricing :eek: :rolleyes:

Ronnie ,to save drilling massive holes in the roll bar mounting plates to hold the rear shocker top mount I have used allen bolts,maybe something to add/consider to your kit.

That,ll really help any builder that is soon to be at the rolling stage, its quite annoying when trying to bolt things on & not having the correct type / quantity of bolts at hand ....

You are correct Ronnie, the pinch bolt on the front upright does need to be longer as it holds the upper wing stay bracket...needs a Nyloc nut too ;)

Don,t forget to put some bolts aside for your own NEW build :)
