made quite a bit of progress in the last week or 2

after some very very helpful welding advice from peoples (thanks guys) iv managed to get the chassis 99% welded, still one really 'orrible one to grind off and re-do but that'll have to wait till funds allow a die grinder!

also evicted my dad from the garage :D so now have a nice double garage all to myself! but have filled it with sierra parts! also got the sierra stripped down quite a bit!

because im quite methodical (get it from my mum) iv been boxing and wrapping everything up as i go so when/if it sells i only have to whack a few stamps and an address on it and off it goes! also im taking everything off the donor to make as much money back as possible (iv even taken the soundproofing out  ) if anyone wants some sapphire bits you know where to come!

im quite lucky really as we have quite a bit of space here, i still live with parents... not for long tho, university next year :D cant wait! motorsport engineering here i come :) we also have quite a bit of land, so took the stripped back very light sierra around the field just for a bit of fun (the looks on some of the walkers faces were a picture!) iv never had so much fun in my life! the thing wouldnt stay in a straight line! unfortunatly no pics or video yet, going to give it one final send off before the engine come out. (will get a video for your amusement)

speaking of which im not going to be using the sierra engine as i have a zetec ready (ish) and waiting so will have a 1.8 cvh up for sale in the next month if anyone is interested (before it goes on ebay ill let you know again)

also got to do something iv wanted to do for ages today, because the sierra had a little crack in the windscreen it wasnt worth trying to get out to sell so... wait for it... i kicked it out, have no idea why but it made my day, that glue is bloody strong though!

also made myself a twirly jig to make grinding and welding the underside of the chassis a tad easier, was very useful, no longer needed so its come down now and back on the table.

Hmm, I couldn't help noticing that in picture one you have an empty glass. Please get some beer in it before going any further:).
Looking god - keep it up.

another 'lil' update

havnt had much time on the build recently, however i have managed to get the sierra stripped down quite a bit, its still drivable (if i put a seat in) but should be completely stripped and shell scrapped in the next week or 2!

have just received my wishbones and uprights from talon which were spot on :) cheers phil! which i will hopefully paint in the next week.

then its save some pennys for mushrooms, drag links, ball joints, polybushes and whatever else i need to get it rolling!

just the one quick question today :o

what distance does the bottom of the sump want to be from the bottom of the chassis rails? i read somewhere 25mm but this to me seems like the engine is going to stick quite a way up (im using a zetec blacktop)

Cheers

Looks like you are making some great progress there Jake  :)

I am using the Silvertop Zetec engine at the moment.
The bell housing flange on the gearbox is about 25mm below the chassis rails & I altered my sump to more or less the same level as the flange.

Depends what the roads are like in your area, this might have an impact on the ground clearance you choose for your engine.

At the measurement I gave you for my install, the engine clears the bonnet fine ( Not sure if the Blacktop is taller than the Silvertop though )

Hope that helps :)

i see, well the roads round here are awful at best  but im not using it for road, going to be track use only this time. will build something else for road use at some point ;)

i think 25mm clearance should do it, going to make my own bodywork anyways, always wanted to do some fibreglass work so this is the perfect opportunity!

Cheers bonzo

again not much been going on but there is some news

the sierra is now stripped right down to a bare shell which should be going to scrap next weekend :)

also done a little work on the chassis but nothing noticeable on pictures, finishing welds and the sort. had a little moment earlier where i decided to put the engine and gearbox on the table and the chassis around it which turned out to be a silly idea without and engine crane.

should be ordering the diff mounts and getting a new bell housing for the type 9 to zetec modification in the next week. needing the diff mounts to align the engine and get the mounts made.

a couple of piccies for your entertainment one of the sierra engine removal in progress (complete with front axle) and one of my silly idea :)
