Has any body here had any dealings with making 2.0 Impreza engines run? Is it easier to use the standard ECU and bypass any imobiliser or run some thing like megajolt/squirt?
I've not taken much notice of these engines before but the unit next to me has one in the way and possibily going budgie fashion ie cheap. I was planning on using the CVH with twin 40's that lives under the bench but having had next doors Scooby pass by yesterday burbling away through a 3" pipe made me think why not. I know the engine looks quite wide but it's also quite low if it's pushed right back it might fit? Now wheres that tape......

Never took much notice of the engine dimensionally when i used to have one, but i do remember that it was very very wide and would be a mare to put into a roadster!
You would probably have to relocate the turbo aswell due to clearance issues
Also the one i had (2003) had 3 cats on it! so maybe it would be difficult to pass emmisions during iva without the original ecu and the cats, theres always a way but as with most things the "way" would cost a fortune
And what gearbox would you use

Better to have a small engine that you can use all the power than one you can't

I very much doubt it will fit in a standard chassis, nd bear in mind that there are 2 spark plugs on each side so you'd have to make access panels in the side panels of the car (it takes nearly an hour to change them in my legacy!)
As for ECU I think I would try to use the standard one.
Oooh and if you did get it all to fit and work it would be one scary car!!!!!

There's no turbo on this engine but I've had another thought where does the front diff sit, is it part of the sump? I hav'nt got a standard chassis mine is the same size at the front but br11+12 are 100mm longer to accomadate my child bareing hips and fiesta si seats.

I have seen one in a focus, and it was tight!

It's a tight fit in my legacy and it's meant to be put in there lol

The front diff in the imprezas is part of the gearbox. The engines are indeed quite wide, roughly about 76cm at widest point on new age non-turbos.
Is it a GX or GL you are looking at using?...I would definitely stick with the standard ECU as you will get far more out of the engine.
If you could squeeze it all in, that would be one beast of a car!!

Weve been looking into fitting a scooby turbo lump into the haynes chassis since my brother crashed his!
The engine is 80cm wide and 47cm long, its to wide for the standard chassis but the length is perfect.
The other problem is the exhaust manifolds are under the engine so will need abit of imagination.
The gearbox is spot on for the roadster aswell , just have to convert it to 2WD which is really simple.
go for it!

Had a chance to have a good look around the engine and box today and run a tape over it and compare to my chassis. The front corners of the valve covers will poke 20-30mm out side of the chassis so no major problem and they also fit between the top and bottom rails with not a huge amount of sump hanging below the chassis. It's got the whole wiring loom with it so should be plug and play more or less (fingers crossed).
The exhaust manifold(s) could be interesting though, I thought about bringing them towards br7, joining them together and chosing a side to exit them on. Another option is to have one either side and have it sound like a V twin :D

how are you going to get it in the chassis if the cylinders stick out?
Or are you thinking of bulging the top rails?

Yes that has been pointed out to me and I had these thoughts (and yes it did hurt).
Option 1: fit the gear box first, turn the engine 90' to the chassis, turn engine with in chassis and bolt up. Could result in a few crushed fingers etc...
Option 2: build another chassis on the bench with tr1+2 removed , fit engine and box weld back up and worry about getting it out when it goes wrong....
Option c: forget the whole idea and fit an in line four pot but where's the fun in that.....

I've now got the lump in my shop and stripped all the front sub frame off it, I like scooby drive shafts just knock the roll pin out and pull the shaft off. Today I cut through TR1+2 in my Roadster +4 chassis and removed half the type9 tunel, half of that was a mistake as an impreza engine basicly fits a standard chassis,Doh! So I'm going to use my chassis of now many parts to mock up the engine mounts and tunel ect and make a new one with new steel.

I don't think it will be as amazing as you would think as it's the non turbo lump and the AWD gear box is not all that light. I'm putting in a steel floor and using 1mm zintec for the panels as it's 1/4 the price of ali sheet. This will hopefuly be a budget build and be a bit of a challenge to give me some thing new to do other than standard parts.

Hi
The Scooby box isn't all that difficult to mod to two wheel drive. All the info is here.

You will need to log into the site to see the pix.
Good luck

I had a look at the 2wd conversion and there are a few points that concern me. Where it says remove a few components and weld back together that tends to lead to misalinement and breaking under stress, espesh if welding cast and hardened parts such as diff parts. I think it will be more reliable to just leave it alone as it currently works and does'nt drip oil.
I've chopped the chassis around and removed the 1600 CVH mounts to accomadate the exhaust manifolds and sat the engine and box in it's tempary home untill I get the clean chassis made.
