If anyone is wondering, the Mk2 Micra radiator does not fit under the nosecone...doh!

Any suggestions for a radiator that will?

Could you not tilt the rad back on an angle to fit under the nosecone? I think this is what others have done?

Yep, I tried that and still can't get it to fit.

The only way I could get it in there was sideways, but that might be a little awkward when I have to fill it with coolant :D

This is the one i've got.Not a bad price.

Actually, my previous statement isn't entirely correct.
If I remove the fan assembly from the micra radiator it will just fit under the nosecone.

That's not a bad price for a brand new rad!
I think I might go the polo route, this micra radiator is going to be more trouble than it's worth...

Couple of questions about the polo rad:

* What's the M22x1.5 hole halfway down the side of it for?

* It doesn't have a radiator cap like the micra and my donor did. Is that built into the expansion bottle instead on the Polo? Does that mean I would need a Polo expansion bottle too?

* What's the diamter of the hose connections?

The hole is for the fan switch, you can either use it or buy a blanking plug for it.

You do need an expansion bottle for it, mine came from a mondeo, and I think is the same one that Westfield supply

The hose connections are 32mm top and bottom.

Cheers

Adrian

What you doing for a fan Steve? MX-5 fan looks like it will fit but it's sucker and looks bulky. Found this fan (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/12-UNIVERSAL-PULL-TYPE-RADIATOR-FAN-OVER-2000cc-12v-/330534132234?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4cf55e9a0a) again a sucker but light and cheap. Going to use a mk4 polo expansion bottle feeding the system from the heater matrix pipework.

I hope that's not me you're referring to
Spud was calling me Steve the other week too.
My name's not Steve, lol

I haven't got any further with the radiator/fan yet.
I'm hoping to use the MX5 fan, but I haven't checked to see if it will fit yet.
Don't want to spend cash if I don't have to!

I'm planning to use a Polo expansion bottle too.
How are you going to connect it to the heater hoses?

Aha, I thought your name was Steve as that's what Andrew called you!:)

I'm presuming that I can use a T-piece (which I may attempt to make by braising together the copper heater matrix pipes, or not) which will allow flow through the heater matrix pipes at the back of the engine. The hose on the third connection will run up to the expansion bottle mounted on the bulk head the other connection from the bottle will then run to the rad. Have you sorted a blank for the rad thermoswitch?

I want to use a big fan for when I go turbo. Maybe the 14" one will fit ok? (http://www.redlineuk.co.uk/radiator-fans/all-products/)

I think the 14" fan would fit, but looking at the dimensions it would overhang the top and/or bottom of the radiator.
That could potentially be worse for cooling as the path of least resistance for the air flow would be bypassing the rad altogether.
I reckon 12" might be a better bet.

Haven't bothered looking for a blank yet. I'll probably just use the Polo thermo-switch, I don't think they cost much.

Isn't one of the connections on the expansion bottle an overflow pipe?

yes the little hose from the rad goes to the top of the bottle and the bottle cap acts as a pressure relief valve. Hmmm I rekon I could sell the mx5 fan for £20, maybe 12" just to be safe.

Got home walked in the garage looked at the mx5 fan and thought it's perfect why am I looking at alternatives!! Doh! Too much time to think when in work!!

Ricky, depending on what engine you use the rad will go in the engine bay if you had a custom one made.

I fitted a Ginetta rad to the race car and it fits perfectly in the engine bay.

If you can get a custom rad made easier than buying anything else then have it made to fit the nose-cone so you can duct it out. Trick curved one like they use on bikes would give more area for less space:)
