Hey All!
Noobie from Chester embarking on an MX5 based project.
Been having a good nosey round at some of your build threads for info and insperation and come to the conclusion that I would like an MX5 based car which I can modify progressively as the build progresses.
As it as forum this thread will be pic heavy (but dont we all love pics!)

Welcome to the forum, looks like you have started your way on the path to stress, frustraition, sleepless nights , painfull lows and even minor highs at times oh the joys of a self build car! I would get that stripped down to a bare shell ASAP as scrap steel prices are currently at £180 per 1000kg and increasing. What are your plans for improvements would these be along the lines of a turbo, super charger or both :D

Hey All!
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Been on 3 trips to the scrappy today weighing in a Cat C 106 and a Lexus 430GS ( engine transplant in a Supra 3.0l straight 6 to 4litre V8) so I can concour that steel prices are good!
Should be collecting the MX5 next Mon or Tue. Its a 1.6 fairly tidy but has seen its days as a MAZDA..... lol
After build and rebuilding various Mini's, 306 Dturbo's, Volvo T5R's i'm familar with pain dont worry! just a nice little project out of the profits out of the last few Cat C/D rebuilds.

Set of Welding magnets....bound to come in handy... and managed to blag work into sending me on a welding course ( can all ready weld but nothing like having a certificate too at their expense! )
Table should be built tomorrow ;o)
Tues/Wed collect the MX5 Donor then speak to Andy about an MX5 based flat pack :)

We use them they are really handy. Keep them wrapped up in cloth because every bit of swarf within 75 miles seems to find its way on to them and they are a fxcker to keep clean. Dont try weld to close them either as they throw the weld.

I wish they would not use fork lifts on salvage cars, damages all sorts. My Cat C Galaxy has crushed sill, crushed water pipes and a crushed fuel tank. and the real damage was a low speed impact that damaged the front bumper and rads.

Well another day another update. Engine mounts arrived in the post along with my shiny new VIN plate. Then spent the rest of the day with a razor blade and a pair of wire cutters chopping the crap out of the MX5 loom. Quite surprised how little useless crap was in there, but as it doesnt have AC, ABS,TRACS or any of that other rubbish the loom is pretty straight forward and basic

Looking very good there but you really ought to unwind that extension lead off the drum. Drawing the kind of power a welding set does it can get hot enough to catch fire like that. I have seen one go up in smoke before and its a bit scary, also the fumes from the burning insulation are pretty noxious.

I hope you have not welded straight on top of the black scale of the tube and that it has been given a 45' weld prep on all the joints.

Looking good
You might want to remove TR5 though, I'm pretty sure it interferes with the intake manifold on the MX5 engine.

Hey Skov,
I'll be lifting the frame over the engine tomorrow so i'll whip out TR5 if its catching :)

Rolled over and welding the underneath and hidden welds.
When SSC releases their updated build guide I'll start welding the CP plates on

I wouldn't recommend putting the frame over the engine. It will go, but it's a total pig. It's very tight and will only fit over at a funny angle.
If you do go that way whip the exhaust manifold and the intake support bracket off before you start - it's a lot harder to remove them whilst holding the chassis above the engine with your other hand
Good luck!

Yeah back into it in a big way. With some help from Skov I've knocked up a set of engine monunts that I'll test fit tonight and tack weld in place. I'm using 4mm plate on the flat surfaces and 6mm for the 'legs' although may swap the plate for thicker but havent decided yet so any thoughts on this would be helpful.

Well quick session with the weld and out pops a set of trial fit engine mounts

Any suggestions on a measurement to the crank pulley bolt from either side of the chassis?

I ended up with elongated oval holes in my engine mounts to get the alignment right:o

Think i may well end up doing the same.....
Started on the wishbone mounts yesterday with some threaded bar to get the alignment right.... my least favorite bit so far, really worry about getting them in the wrong place and the car is going to forever scrub tyres and crab. Granted I'd have to get it pretty far out to do that but still....
Also has anyone got a measurement from the center of the MX5 crank bolt to the chassis for reference on the alignment?

You should check out john's (skov) build thread and gallery. I think you'll be needing to take TR5 out. and lower it at least 40mm if it's a 1.6.
