The mini owners club seem to be big into this.

How about some of the cad boys doing a design for the roadster. I would be up for one for my jaunts across europe.

Have to make sure you design and fit your towbar for the IVA and it must pass the IVA sections relating to tow bar type approval.
You need to calculate and know you towing weights.
Fitting one after IVA would likly render your insurance null and void.

Was not thinking industrial just something under the 750kg law on unbraked trailers.
Tow pin like this http://www.fordmanuals.org/page-2932.html
At the mot station we use all we have to do is remove the towball from the bar for them to not include the bar on the test. Thats the only way round a non type approved towing device now. As far as type approval goes it might be the same as it is for the car itself and just have to convince the tester its of sound construction and fit for purpose.

Edit. a bit on trailer weights
Trailer has no brakes (Unbraked Trailer)
■Maximum 750kg gross trailer weight or half the towing vehicle's kerb weight - whichever is less.

Train weight is the thing you are loooking for, this is the highest number of the weights on the car chassis tag fitted to road vehicles.
The two lower ones are axle weights and the train is both added plus trailer weight.

I'm pretty sure that "Dogwood" used to tow a trailer on his haynes. Have a search for his username I'm sure you will find a pic.
