Ok soon gonna need some shocks for rolling chassis so what type, where from and how much will they cost?;)

Both the protech and gaz shocks are really good. I've got protech personally. I paid about 350 quid for them, defiantly one of the most expensive parts of the build :|

It's detailed in the book, in the part section at the front. Coilovers, 13" open 9" closed. You can buy them from companies like gaz or protech, and Saturn sports cars do them too.

Go for Protech, they are much better made for the price. Service is spot on too, they even answer the phone at 7am! 13 open 9 inch closed 34mm bush

For the Mx-5 chassis John you can go for the same as the book, only thing i would recommend to change is stiffer springs on the rear, 250lb, it gives a stiffer and better feel to the rear of the car.

13" open and 9" closed with a one inch extension are expensive and only availble from a few suppliers if you use a shock that is 14" open and 9.5" closed you can used any make coilover type shock as its a std size
i have gaz units (without extension)and the bottom front lower wishbone shock bracket needs a small amount ground off

I found some shocks in the worshop off a jag back end xj12/6 they to are 13" open and 9" closed. Coil overs but non adjustable. Before i get shouted down i was thinking that they might be an ok stop gap for those not ready to pay shed loads for a spax/gaz/protec coil over set up. Jaguar supply plastic shims to tailor the ride height and they are cheap second hand, springs are easily avaiable in different rates.

I guess if the open closed lengths are a match they will fit and get you iva'd
But as a jag would weigh a lot more than a 7 I would guess the damper rates would be very high, giving a harsh skittish ride.
I'm sure someone could revalve them?

So for four new ones with springs you'd be up at £200 against £300-350 for a decent set. If the jag ones are the way forward to get you running I'd probably get some cheap second hand ones and put the £200 towards some proper coilovers when funds allow.

I'm sure its been said before, these car are all about the handling, but each ones tailored for each owner in terms of price, perforamce, spec so make it your own, as long as your happy with it thats the important thing

Can't wait to get a rolling chassis on the go. Tacked my suspension mounts on today and its starting to resemble a car......

Must say it was great once I got mine rolling. Did really make it look like a car :) My avatar is still my 1st proper pic of the car once I rolled it out the garage for the 1st time. I would seriously consider saturn though for your shocks & springs. I got mine on a group by and there wasn't really a big difference in the price, plus you'll get really good service as well :)

I will most probably buy a set of GAZ shocks from Rally Design, as they seem to be as cheap as possible there. A full set with springs plus VAT is something like 315GBP. The question is, can i miss the 1" extension rods and get the 14"-9.5" ones? Anyone tried this before?

as i have said i have 14-9.5's and i have not had my roadster finished yet but are dimentionaly the same and have had them fitted in my chassis.
dont forget the spring is more likely to need to be longer.
iirc i had 350lb 8" for the front (car engine) and went for 220lb 9" for the rear
the std car was 13-9" shocks +1" extension with a 8" spring (350lb f 200lb r) but as people have pointed out the spring in the front was set nearly as low as it could go with std ride hight.
this is why when i was selecting a longer shock i only got a longer spring for the rears so both sets would be mid way in the ajustment.

JAGS run 4 rear shockers from memory so each takes 25% of the rear load.

As For ProT Vs Gaz... A Mate used to work for Gaz, He recommended avoiding them.

Money allowing I would Have AVO/Spax/Koni ... But I have gone with Pro Tec.

So to summarise

You bought

2x 1.9" ID Yellow colour 350lb 8"
2x 1.9" ID Yellow colour 220lb 9"
4x GAZ 14-9.5" 12mm rod bearing type part no 140/095 R12

For anyone looking to buy in the future for an mx-5 Saturn/NTS build requires....

Front 350-400lb 8" length 1.9" ID springs. I got some on ebay in black from JJC for about £50 inc vat the pair. Shocks can be either 13" open 8" closed with a 1 inch extension to the shock or as I have bought 14" open 9.5" closed I got mine from rallydesgin for £60 inc Vat each.

Rear 200-250lb 7" length 1.9" ID springs. Again I got some on ebay in black from demontweaks for around £50 a pair. Shocks as advised by Nathan, should be 12" open 9" closed. I got Gaz again from rallydesign 12" open 8.5" closed. If you order from rallydesign you want to order.

Universal bush eye top and bottom.
2x 140/095/B12
2x 120/085/B12

If you want bearing and not bush then it's R12 not B12.


So the whole lot cost about £340-350 delivered inc a c-spanner for adjustment. If you don't mind yellow springs you can knock £35 off that price getting your springs from Nathan/NTS or rallydesign. Note that rallydesign don't do 400lb 8" 1.9ID springs only 350lb.

If you don't want to take a chance and want to be sure you get exactly what is recommended then go to Nathan and get a full setup from him. I'm skint so I took my chances.

Are you sure it's 9" closed Chris? The reason I ask is that NTS sell an 8" closed rear damper for the MX5 build...

G = Gaz
140= 14'' open
095 = 9.5'' closed
B12 = bush mounted (12mm rod)
2 = 2'' body

Springs:
2.25'' x 8'' x 350 lbs springs : part number = RD1193/8
2.25'' x 8'' x 250 lbs springs : part number = RD1189/9
