My cheap wickes grinder chewed up the keyway and a motor brush about 3 weeks ago. I patched it up by welding up the keyway and filing it back to shape and then got a cheap set of brushes of ebay but yesterday it chucked out a puff of smoke had a little death dance on the garage floor and then expired. An autopsy revealed it had melted the plastic lower motor bearing housing, so in the bin it went..

I'd had my eye on a deWalt grinder going cheap on screwfix for a couple of weeks but didn't want to payout for a new one.

Well today I parted with some build cash and I have to say it is absolutely brilliant. Quiet, balanced, smooth, accurate, fast, economical with the 1mm slitting discs and an absolute dream to use compared to the nasty cheap wickes grinder, which actually did make a horrible grinding noise just spinning free.

Anyway if you want a good reasonably priced grinder this one is only £50 from screwfix and will make your steel cutting a pleasure.:)

Had

Boshc
Black and Decker
Clarke

All died.

Had a BnQ Pro thingy for what must be five years and it's still going strong, got one of their jigsaws too which is better than my two previous B&D ones..

I do however have a B&D Scorpion reciprocating saw that has seen lots and lots of abuse. It's had to have a new blade mount but it still goes ;) unlike the previous saws that I had 4 of the same model exchanged!!!

I had a dewalt one too, vibrates half as much as the cheaper ones!

Also you could probably get one gold plated and it would still be cheaper than the B&Q entry one? :p

I have two of the Aldi 4.5" angry grinders at £12 each I think it was. 1200 watts so plenty of power and mine survive workshop use. A mate of mine bought four when I got mine but he is a pro fabricator so they suffer lots of abuse in his hands. Over 12 months in and he's still not killed any of his and mine are both still going strong. They also carry a three year guarantee and come with several discs, two guards, safety goggles, spanner, spare brushes. When they have them in again I might just grab a couple of spare units.

There is a cheapskate lurking in all of us , I could not resist the nu tool grinders at about £12 and they never lasted, I reckon they poked up with about 8 hours of proper work and just gave up. You get what you pay for. Problem with the brand names are they do cheap versions of thier own.

All of the above would do a job for someone, but if you reckon on daily abuse get the most expensive model you can as its cheaper in the long run. Bit like expensive tools eg a snap on ratchet at about £60, is it expensive when they have put a dozen sets of guts in it for nothing over a period of 20 years?
