Painting time is a week away! Need some advice on my options.

Hell all!

Well im about 1 week away from painting the chassis.

Only thing i THINK i have left to do is weld on the steel floor (i have two sheets 2m x 1m sheets @ 2mm and 2.5mm over kill i know!) and install 4 brackets for brake lines. Once thats done i can start the prep work.

I have read loads and loads about the paint and there seems to be way too many options. I would like to know what you guys have done. I'm looking for a paint that i can start final rebuild quite soon and cant really wait around days and days for it to full set hard so a fast setting paint would be fantastic. I have access to a gravity fed spray gun so can use that along side rollers and bush. Also to note is the floor will be painted so must not be a flakey paint.

All help and advice welcome as i need to order the paint soon if its a specialist item.

Thinking two coats of an etch primer and two coats of POR 15 Hardnose Paint in grey then a final in black.

Also looking at sandblasting it clean rather than doing it by hand anyone had this done and is it worth it? As my chassis has quite a bit of surface mess...

as i have said before a good quality zinc phosphate based primer (isopon zinc 182) and then hum drum chassis black (used on truck chassis rails etc.)
the top coat is fairly quick to touch dry but can take a while to fully harden but its realy quiet chip resistent and i found cheap easy to use and std thinner can be used
no air feed masks needed like meny 2k paints

i sprayed mine but as its so complex an area and shape over spray is almost imposible

brush and foam roller could be a better option

I'm going to give mine a sandblast followed by a soaked celly cloth wipe over then several coats of acrylic grey primer then a 2k grey final coat that has a near powder coat type finish.:D

Etch primer is a good call as it tends to eat into everything including light rust.

I'm at exactly the same stage... just got the brake bracket to weld on. Like you have read lots and lots on what to do.. but decided on giving the chassis good going over with a brillo pad, panel wipe down, 1-2 coats of Acid Etch Primer 8 and the 1-2 coats of chassis paint (probably POR15 Chassis Black)

Its the way to go if poss, the paint gets a key second to none but you have to be quick with the primer, the same day if possible. Most of the quarries round here have got guys doing blasting and a roadster chassis would not cost more than £80.

Hummm is there any other option other than a 2 part paint? From my previous use of the stuff it took a month to go fully hard and to this day 1 year later will mark if you push a nail into it. Looking to order paint this week for use next weekend.

yes there is plenty of non 2 part paint

all depends on what colour and finish and how durable you need it to be
the time you have to apply it and the tooling you have to apply it
i wanted a gloss black finish that will be chip resistent that was not to expensive and needed no airfeed masks and a good quality primer that has etch and good rust prevention.
i was offerd a 2.5l free sample of new satin black hammarite and that did a nice job on my roll bar.

Ok then :D lets see!

Aim:
Get the chassis painted over a short period of time. As i share the garage and need to get it finished before it gets all dusty from the wood work guys. Also have large areas of steel sheet that will require a fair amount of paint.

Tools:
Air compressor
Gravity feed gun
Fair bit of space.
Use of 3 people over 2 days (including sanding and prep) after it would be just me.

Finish:
Rollcage to be spayed to give a nice finish.
Floor im thinking roller brushes and air gun.
Everything else roller brush and paint brush.

From that what would you guys recommend? I like the idea of hammerite as its easy to get. But have heard loads of horror stories about flaking and problems with it sticking to itself. Epoxy mastic 1-2-1 is ok stuff but i found the finish of my wishbones poor and found it a pain to use.
