Forklifts are a popular choice here as they are very compact. Although I can't remember which one.

I should think a daihatsu A073 (40amp) or H073 (60amp) are about the smallest and lightest that I've seen. I think they're about 6 inches long and 4 inches diameter. They weigh about 2.5kg iirc.

I went to the breakers and picked the smallest they had in their Japanese department. Even the small hatches have 60A alternators minimum. I took one from a Nissan Sunny, I think the model is Hitachi LR165. It weighed 3.5 kg if I recall correctly.

Nippon Denso alternator Bob :)

Found on a lot of jap cars at the breakers.

Here's a picture that might help.

That one has a better mounting lug than the one I found on ebay. What was it off of Ronnie? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Denso-Light-Weight-Competition-Alternator-40-Amp-/120994791869?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D2895605214804622411%26pid%3 D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D4%26sd%3D320855776143% 26

That also look very like my MR2 Mk2 alternator, i stole a replacement of a supra as it was the same making me think that the same alternator may be fitted to may models.

I got one of those underdrive ali pulley sets so i can bore the alternator pulley to any size I like so that wont be a problem. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c258/trackm3/a111112.jpg.

WFMB Baz someone is knocking them out on bay of thieves, stumbled across them looking at the denso alternators. They are five rib but that wont matter http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ali-Alternator-Pulley-Titanium-Nut-Denso-light-weight-Ribbed-Belt-Kit-Car-V8-/321001136445?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4abd28a13d

i was after 6pk (6 grove) or 5 when i was looking for my own build and there was none about then also the smallest body denso's (>40A) usualy have 3pk or v belt as std fitments also the denso pully is a small bore so it was sleave and larger bore pully job
powervamp do them now as i just seen at exeter show

i ended up useing a larger birdcage (internal fan) alternator made by mitsubishi 70A with a bespoke mount
