View Full Version : Steering coupling

I've got three universal joints on my steering. The top one is 21 years old from a sierra. The middle is 20 years old from an Escort . The bottom one that connects to the rack is 18 months old from Rally Design.
Guess which one is going in the bin.
I bought the coupling more than a year ago so Rally Design won't replace it. I wish I'd checked it when I got it. Wasn't until last week that I finally connected all the steering up and found out how much play there is in the joint. I can't use it because I just can't trust it.
So has anyone used an alternative joint from elsewhere? It was the sierra one to Escort rack and I can't find them anywhere else.

Thanks Ozzy but I was hoping to find one that fits the triangular shaft so I don't have to re-do the steering. I think in the end I might just have to do that.

I've bought a coupling from a Ford Ka. Much better quality than the Rally Design one and a cheaper as well. Fits the Escort rack perfectly.

I had to make an adapter to go from the triangular shaft to the hexagon shape on the coupling but I'm much happier now
The Rally design coupling I have here is new and unused and free to anyone who wants to pm me. It might do for mock up or use until you get something else.

Hi,
What was the problem with Rally Desing sierra to escort UJ exactly please ?
I bought one myself, and the triangular bit was too small for the triangular sierra steering column shaft, and I had to bend it to make it fit, and I'm not happy with that.
But what was your problem? Did it break?
Thank you for more details.

It just had a lot of play in the universal joint. So much that I felt I couldn't use it. It probably ammounted to 20mm play at the steering wheel.
I was also annoyed that it didn't fit the Sierra column very well.
This is how it looks at the moment
