To join other forums is much harder than here. You have to be approved by the mods with emails being exchanged long before you would ever get a chance to post up shite like the spammers.Maybe the back door needs to be shut.

Yes it can be turned off, unless there is a bug being exploited.

Never installed vBulletin myself but used to administer one before it changed to new software.

I am off out for a few hrs so there may be a build up of junk whilst I am away.

It is money -- they're getting paid for "SEO", or promoting certain sites on Google, in other words. One way to do that is to get lots of links to the site with the right keywords in the link text from other reputable sites. Forums and blog comments are a popular target. A script that creates users and posts messages with links on a certain vBulletin version will work on a multitude of forums, making them a high-gain target. Forum software gets updated often plugging security holes that allow such automated spam. Looks like the version we're using here was released in 2006, I'm surprised it held so long, really.

OMG YOU MEAN I GO TO SIT HERE FOR 43 MINUTES! ARE YOU SERIOUS

lol lol

Yes I am a full time dad of 7 now, however up until just over three years ago I worked in the IT industry for 17 years, cabling/fibre engineer moving on to PBX engineer and converged networks (Avaya & Mitel), wireless implementation and then project management. Life situations change and so here I am . . .

Oh, prior to that I served my mechanics apprenticeship and then worked a couple of years in the body shop.

Although I have no experience of forum software I do understand the complexities surrounding the issue, its easy just to think its a technical thing but I do realise there's a whole bundle of politics surrounding it unfortunately.

All the best TT

Bruce

PS my little one starts school full time in September so hopefully I'l get back on track career wise :)

my youngest started school this year , makes life easier..

The SW is a depriciated version, for a low volume forum we are so far under the radar that it would be unlikly to be clocked.... but we have been unlucky.

I look after a cisco call manager cluster as part of my remit...

I must admit, I'd never change any of the choices I made but I do look forward to when he's full time, although I'l miss him being around then, but at least I'l be able to get back to work as I seriously underestimated the impact not working would have on me.

Although MiTech were a Cisco agent I got stuffed with the crappy Mitel when it first came out :( it was was fighting fires all the time unfortunately.

Been massively busy today to keep track of the forum, so either Ash has cleaned up or it's stopped?

Actually spent most of the day building a network firewall, fixing general issues, plugging in a TV for a user who said it was faulty, and waiting for 8000 emails that my system accidentally sent out to our shared mailbox to finish being received ( and the system is being built to prevent atacks LOL )

It's only 8000 to 4 users , I called it "Stress Testing ;)"

Just checked my webpage blog's recent log in entries - I disabled users and registration nodes as well as posting in fear of spamming and poising my blog a long time ago.
For 22 November from 00h00 to 06h53 pm there was 155 spammers trying to get registered or getting into the backdoor in some nodes:eek:

This are going on for months now and usually by same few perpetrators - I banned their IP's but they just use different ones all the time after banning a IP.... now I do not even bother with that. Luckily my password is a spammer or hacker's worst nightmare :)
