Try disconnecting it and keeping the choke open for starters. Is the choke air inlet open or do you have an air filter? If you have a filter, take it off for now, see if it makes it better. I don't know the carb on your engine but I would be about 90 per cent certain that's where your problems lie. Your car is running seriously rich - an air leak would make it run lean, the only thing that can make it run rich is overfueling which is down to the carb.

would over hauling the carb ang giving it a good clean help as i could do that in an hour or 2..?

Enoch & Tatey have given good advice, perhaps buy the "Colourtune kit", this is a kit you can buy ( I think about £20) that helps set up the fueling of a carbed engine,
Don,t give up on the engine just yet, as Enoch has said ...the fact its not blueish smoke is a good sign.

Or get one of those mobile home tuners to come & service the engine ;) :)
They,ll have the correct equipment & knowledge to solve your problem.

Cleaning the carb won't do any harm. Make sure that the fuel flow is being cut off when the float is at the right height. If there is too much fuel in the float bowl it will run as rich as Richard Branson, which would cause shit running and black smoke. Best way to check that is with the carb stripped get a length f clean tube on to the carb fuel inlet and blow through it. When yu gently lift the float it should be impossible to continue blowing - that will prove if teh fuel is getting shut off OK.

Definatly sounds like it's over fuling.

Perhaps somone here who has gone to bike carbs has a spare peirburg kicking arround. It's 10 years since I played with a 2e3 on a sierra, they have various things like accelerator pumps that may be stuck.

A full careful strip and clean may be all it needs.

One other thing... HAve you got a fuel return from the carb?

TT
