Im assuming its smaller in diameter and thats why it fits. Ive personally never compared it to any other.

I think there is only one type for the 1.8cvh, and have been told many times by people who have done it thats what you need when using type 9 and zetec.

The idler in my pic came off the front of the Escort silvertop.

Starter motor on mine is off a DOHC Sierra, not sure what the part number is though....

Heres how much I ground off the blacktop sump:

was the idler put on sing a bracket?
so when i link it up to the tupe 9 i need a sierra starter?

do you have any dimensions for the braket you made to take pulley/ idler?

I made the idler just postion it so the belt got good contact round the other pulleys. You can put it anywhere really. If you look closely you can see the mole grips holding the belt? This was to get the length then down off to Halfords for the correct belt.
