Brillllll idea Andy mate...
As per usual, you're the man.

David

HandyAndy 23rd January 2011 08:46 AM

Thanks for your kind words Chris, you,ll soon be unwrapping the stage 1 kit & getting stuck into your build,

David :o , aww shucks :) I just thought it allows a builder to have the option to actually make a start on their build knowing that each stage will follow when the time is right for them .

many thanks for the thumbs up :)

cheers
andy

fatbungy 25th January 2011 10:24 PM

Thanks Andy

Just thought i'd mention that my Handy Andy flat pack kit arrived today. Ive already got it laid out on the build table and it looks tip top with everything present and correct (as expected).

I can't believe how well its labeled up, even the angles on the ends of the tubes are marked up. Hopefully this means it will be idiot proof, well i'll see about that anyway ,:)

Almost seems a shame to let my dodgy welding anywhere near it:o

If you get really stuck on the welding side of things & fancy a visit to Penzance, I would be happy to spend a few hours giving you some basic MIG welding tuition :)

Quite happy to offer welding assistance to any forum member who is local or willing to travel ;)

Nothing wrong with a big fat hairy, man hug Mark:D

Just a shame I live so far West of most folk .... If I hadn't had help & moral support from some of the memberers of this forum, my build would have been abandoned many moons ago ;)

I too have had some much needed help from a member of this forum but can assure you he would be the last bloke you would want to hug...his arms are bigger than my legs so a hug from the "big fella" would certainly mean a trip to A&E

Bonzo 26th January 2011 04:10 PM

Tell you what Mark, I would rather have a hug from the big fella than come face to face with him on the rugby pitch

Think I would be beyond the help of A&E :D

Sorry for the thread highjack Andy mate :o

Thanks for your kind words Fatbungy ( I must ask where that name came from :D ) & I hope you enjoy building the kit as much as I enjoy cutting them:cool:
Any questions.....the forum is your "friend"

Enjoy your build & when you get chance post up a couple of photos of your progress.

And as for the big hairy hugs  Can you imagine the looks on folks faces if we all performed a huge forum hug at stoneleigh :D
But, you,re spot on....its a great community on here.

cheers

dogwood 27th January 2011 09:46 AM

Oh no...time for another group hug....:o

Bonzo 27th January 2011 10:02 AM

Nearly died laughing David :D

Thanks for the offer Ronnie it's much appreciated but i've managed to pursuade a couple of the engineers at work to give me a few pointers.
however if that dosen't work you might see me in Penzance soon.:)

Cheers Steve

Bonzo 27th January 2011 08:14 PM

You are most welcome Steve.

That is an open ended offer, if you get stuck at any point, give us a holler mate :) :)

Do you ship to Australia?

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the forum, :)

You seem to be doing some great research on your proposed build,

Yes, I can ship to Australia, not sure of shipping costs ( can get a confirmed costing for you on monday ).

Saturn Sports Cars are currently developing the chassis to accept the MX 5 running gear, & the flat pack chassis kits will be available to accept the MX5 as its donor.

cheers

I've had a few enquiries from Oz and Fedex is the only company that will touch it £240 was there best price.

Thanks for your input,

fabbyglass 29th January 2011 10:36 AM

That seems mad to me, it will cost you more to have a few bits of tube shipped in than it would to have someone near you in Oz cut it...surely easier all round and cheaper if supplied drawings?

Novel idea........:D

Aussie_Haynes_MX5 29th January 2011 11:08 AM

Yes i could, but it would cost quite a bit more than getting a whole flat pack shipped. More the laziness of me. I've got the material, but it's the room and the time which are the limiting factor. I will have to do it at work where all the tools are, but have to do it after hours and then have to make sure that it's been moved out of the workshop by the morning and hidden so the bosses can't see it.

Cool I had to do that when I first started......but then they turned up at my workshop because donkey here must have left something laying around on my bench at work...thing is I chucked a sicky but actually went to my workshop:D

Aussie haynes,
Most of the chassis is easy to cut and would get you started. The harder parts are the compound angles on a few of the tubes so you could do these ones at work maybe? They tend to make more sense as you cut them when you need them and offer them up to the chassis.
If you are going to go the the flat pack route i would also buy the fibreglass at the same time and get it all shipped together.Just bear in mind you will have to pay import duty of 5% on the cost of the goods including shipping costs and also 10% Gst.

Probably not going to go the flat pack route at the moment. Looks like work is going to give me a bit of extra time in the evenings to start of cutting and making the frame. I'll tough it out and make mistakes, and cut more than two lots of metal . . . . . . .

Sounds like you have a great employer :)

The cost of shipping a full chassis kit is quite high, if its just the kit alone.......but if you decide to order any parts from the Uk then I supply the "Compound Mitre Cut Packs", might save a bit of time for you ........

just a thought :) might save "cutting more than two lots of metal" :)

Best wishes for your build, keep us all posted with your progress, photos, photos we all like photos

I took the diy route myself having zero previous metal working experience and have only had to re-cut 3 bits so far. I can imagine getting the flatpack would save you alot of time but personally had I wanted to save a bit of cash where I could and managed to get all the steel tube plus a big sheet of 3mm plate for just under 200 quid delivered :)

Rest assured it will not come to that! An extra 6m length at most. Otherwise all of the wrongly cut tubes get used up a bit further down the line. The last major area fabricated out of 25 mm tubes is the rear suspension cage, and it is made up out of 15 or so tubes 20, 30, and 40 cm long. Eats up all the offcuts you have left. I used all the shorter ones for practicing my welding and letting friends have a go with the welder.

The full chassis kit contains all the box tube to make the main frame of the chassis, including the tranny tunnel & also includes the choice of rear tub framework depending on which tub a builder intends to fit ( GRP or ALI ).

The kits don,t include the CP plates, wishbone/suspension brackets or any of the steel work to make the rear uprights or any wishbones.
Basically, the kit allows the builder to make up the main frame of the chassis & includes a fully welded front frame which saves the need to make a jig for it.

Tho if you are looking for a "kit Stage/package" then Saturn sports Cars offer various levels of kits that can include things such as the CP plates / uprights / wishbones & even full kits to include everything apart from the parts required from the donor car, have a look at their stores page on www.saturnsportscars.co.uk

I supply the chassis flat packs to Saturn for any of their staged kits.

Any questions just shout, happy to help in any way I can.

cheers

Hi,

I have my kits on my Ebay listing at £220 but am happy to supply a forum member the kit for £200 plus the delivery charge ( I only charge what the courier charges me ).

All I need to know is which rear tub frame & which tranny tunnel fitment is required.

Cheers Andy!

Hi,

I feel that with the great work done by Spud at Saturn it would be wrong of me to offer the Flat Pack chassis kits for the Mx5 donor , especially as Spud has also made the drawings/ plans available to all via the Saturn website, I,ve seen the Saturn MX5 rolling chassis build & indeed it does look very good, Spud has done some great work getting it done.

I will however still be offering the chassis kits for the Sierra based donor & will always offer any help I can .

cheers
andy
