Well another day another update. Engine mounts arrived in the post along with my shiny new VIN plate. Then spent the rest of the day with a razor blade and a pair of wire cutters chopping the crap out of the MX5 loom. Quite surprised how little useless crap was in there, but as it doesnt have AC, ABS,TRACS or any of that other rubbish the loom is pretty straight forward and basic

sven8t4 4th August 2011 11:02 AM

Todays update........

Bye Bye MX5!!

sven8t4 4th August 2011 11:03 AM

Cool log Sven, put a smile on my face.

Keep it up should keep us amused.

Cheers....Andrew

sven8t4 4th August 2011 11:16 AM

Cheers Spud!

I'm terrible for taking loads of random pics, but as long as people enjoy them I'll keep adding them :)

Think this afternoon will be spent in the dry in the workshop setting the welder up :)

Sven

ayjay 4th August 2011 02:53 PM

That engine in the LH corner of your workshop looks the biz for a roadster:eek:

Looking awesome Sven, i like your build table

Davey 19th September 2011 07:55 PM

Looking very good there but you really ought to unwind that extension lead off the drum. Drawing the kind of power a welding set does it can get hot enough to catch fire like that. I have seen one go up in smoke before and its a bit scary, also the fumes from the burning insulation are pretty noxious.

D.

sven8t4 19th September 2011 08:00 PM

Cheers Muchly!

yeah waiting on a 16amp plug so i can plug it straight into the socket in the wall thats there. In the mean time I'll unwind it!

Any ideas on the orientation of U4 and U5 as to which direction the 5degree angle should face?

twinturbo 19th September 2011 08:09 PM

Is that table braced at all?

I always forget to unwind my extension, despite knowing the reason and telling people off for running 3 TEA urns off a coiled lead many times..

TT

sven8t4 19th September 2011 08:11 PM

yup welded frame underneath :)

will_08 20th September 2011 09:59 AM

Just keep it coiled, keep the chill off the air, save you needing any additional heaters :)

sven8t4 21st September 2011 09:05 PM

Cheers :)

coming along nicely although SSC's chassis plates dont come numbered.... got a bit confused this afternoon lol

Talonmotorsport 21st September 2011 11:02 PM

I hope you have not welded straight on top of the black scale of the tube and that it has been given a 45' weld prep on all the joints.

skov 21st September 2011 11:21 PM

Looking good

You might want to remove TR5 though, I'm pretty sure it interferes with the intake manifold on the MX5 engine.

sven8t4 26th September 2011 05:45 PM

Hey Skov,

I'll be lifting the frame over the engine tomorrow so i'll whip out TR5 if its catching :)

Sven

sven8t4 26th September 2011 06:02 PM

Rolled over and welding the underneath and hidden welds.

When SSC releases their updated build guide I'll start welding the CP plates on

I wouldn't recommend putting the frame over the engine. It will go, but it's a total pig. It's very tight and will only fit over at a funny angle.
If you do go that way whip the exhaust manifold and the intake support bracket off before you start - it's a lot harder to remove them whilst holding the chassis above the engine with your other hand
Good luck!
