you would be good getting the wheels aligned first tho. :-) and defo put some covers over the prop before running it at any speed andy. Ps have you done with the engine hoist mate? Gotta need for it for a friend.

So, I,m doing the last few odd jobs at the mo...today for instance I was working on making the final connections to a new gauge in my dash & had to disconnect the speedo cable to gain better access....no worries there, any way, did the gauge wiring, then ran the car upto to temp to make sure said gauge was working ok......it was, so , I thought "ah, whilst its running I,ll give it a quick spin " .....then noticed the speedo wasn,t working ...aarggh, ( yes I had reconnected it ), so sets to investigating the cause....turns out the circlip holding the cable into the gearbox had snapped, how I have no idea, now this is not the most easily reached area of the tunnel....had to take the tunnel side panel off to sort it ,

Now its left me with something thats baffling me, the oil temp gauge is now reading 120???? it had only been running a few mins :confused: aarrghhh

Any thoughts on the reason why please guys?


It will NOT beat me :D ....still felt great to drive it.

Sounds like you have had a frustrating day today Andy.

I know how bad it feels to take one step forward & take two back :(

The only thing that springs to my mind is, are you sure you have the right sender unit for the gauge ? ( I suspect that you bought them as a set, complete with senders )

Perhaps the sender is Air locked, causing a false reading !!

I do know that the CVH engine does run quite hot but don't know that the oil temp shoud be :o

Being truthful, I did quite enjoy the day working on the car, sun was out , car was looking good & the little odd jobs are quite satisfying as they don,t take too long to finish ( if that makes sense, gives a sense of achievement completing the task etc)

Yes, all the senders are correct for the gauges as bought as a set etc, the oil temp gauge has worked before & seemed happy at 80, but now showing 120 after only a few mins running, when i first start the engine it takes ages to register any oil temp, then all of a sudden today it jumped to 120 :confused:

I,m starting to think maybe I have a poor earth somewhere, tho it shouldn,t have as all my earth connections are new & secure etc...

Ahh, maybe its just the car "trying it on" with me ,

Just got 3 things left to do to the car,
bootlid
bit more trim
& the one I,m dreading.....fitting the bonnet catches, now normally this is fairly straight forward but I,m using Dzus fasteners & its critical that the holes I drill in the bonnet line up with the catch plate in the engine bay....gulp ....don,t want to spoil my shiney bonnet :eek:

maybe it is telling the truth! Could put the sender in a tin of oil while you heat the oil see what happens. Dont fry it tho!

Good point Tex, i didn,t think it would be actually running that hot, suppose i thought, no reason for it to do so etc, not lost any oil, checked the level etc :confused:

Hmmm, i,ll try your suggestion & see what the sender/gauge reads , cheers .

andy try to put a 2nd temp sensor like a thermometer in the pot if you can. So you can see what the guage reads against that

Well, its not the oil that is overheating,

I,ve worked it out that its something electrical, maybe a bad earth or a frayed wire :eek: so will run a new wire from sender to gauge & see what happens.....have I ever said " I hate electrickery "

Tho I suppose I,m relieved that the oil wasn,t at the temp the gauge was telling me ...phew :)

Whilst working on the car today, 2 Police officers walked up to have a looksy ( unusual sight , seeing two actually walking the beat ), they stayed for ages, asking all sorts about the build, even asked me if I,d driven it yet :o , they weren,t looking for a booking, just seemed genuinely interested in the car,
They stayed so long that they ended up getting on their radio thingy, next thing there was a Police transit van there to pick them up

They were ok tho, they thought the concept of building from scratch very interesting, even asked for a spin out when its registered :D

Any recent pics Andy? Haven't seen it for a while.

The gauge will be a bad earth. I had the same problem with a water temp gauge a while back.

To test the sender. Put a multimeter on the terminals and check there's some resistance there. Ususally as the sender gets warmer, the resistance decreases. So if there's no resistance, the gauge will go straight to max.

Hope that makes a bit of sense. :)

Yes it sort of makes sense, it would mean even more if I knew what setting to put the multi meter on to test for resistance :o

Ash phoned me earlier & was explaining just what you have said, i had the multi meter in my hand.....imagine.......blank expression on my face :o :confused:

This is whats happening....

Start engine,
oil pressure gauge working nicely,
water temp gauge shows increase in temp as it should
The oil temp gauge does nothing for about a minute then shoots to its highest reading :confused:
