will get to rolling chassis then worry about bodywork but if i have to i will fabricate the lot.

and yes pritty much a foot wider

Wider equals stable so wont be a bad thing

HandyAndy 6th March 2010 12:22 AM

are the tubes that I cut to the new dimension ok for you Correl?

hope it goes together ok for you,

cheers
andy

correl 6th March 2010 12:41 AM

Yes so far so good, need to organise the tubes tomorrow lol took ages to find the ones i needed coz there was so many lol

The sizes you have cut so far have got straight on the build board, haven't even needed a file lol!!

Looking forward to tomorrow, got to sort out getting gas for my welder. Then there's nothing stopping me lol

Not doing bad considering i started this less then a month ago!!

You may need to run a file over some of the cut burrs, I left the rear tub frame tubes extra long to allow for adjustment to the dimensions of the wider chassis.

at this rate , you,ll be finished before me  :D

yes, there,s alot of tubes..........i,ve cut 4 kits in the last 13 days :)

enjoy your build

cheers

So your currently in the middle of a build of your own are you how may have you built now then?? Have you been taking any photos? What stage are you at with yours then??

HandyAndy 6th March 2010 08:05 AM

yes, i,m building my own car at the moment, have a look at the thread "big day" in the chassis section, thats me, :) lots of photos in the thread.

I also make parts for lots of folks cars , along side Spud at Saturn Sorts Cars

Your kit is number 16 that i have cut, thats the beauty of the Roadster, they are all based on the same design but allow each builder to "personalise" their own car in some way.

Is the engine on the table yet correl ?

TT

correl 6th March 2010 08:55 PM

Everything is going according to modifed design so far!!!

correl 6th March 2010 08:58 PM

Parts of the kit left to do!!

HandyAndy 6th March 2010 09:03 PM

the writing on those tubes looks familiar :D

doing well there Correl, it,ll really "come to life" when you start adding the tubes that give the chassis some "height".

nice work

If i remember correctly there was 104 tubes in your kit  :D

cheers
andy

spud69 6th March 2010 09:08 PM

That's looking good Correl, don't think you'll have much time to watch that tv though - there's going to be a lot of head scratching as the build goes on but it will certainly be worth seeing it as it progresses.

Just re-read that "Big Day" post TT that was a good day and seems ages ago - just look how much things have moved on now. And how much the haynes and number in build has expanded.

Enjoy....AndyH

correl 6th March 2010 09:43 PM

no gas for my welder at mo tacked the FF together with out gas just o get an idea of height, be gas needed to continue with height.

Things slowing me down lol

Only waiting to hear from BOC for my account to be set up and then i am good to go. Everything takes time!!! lol

spud69 6th March 2010 09:48 PM

BOC - Don't do it...:o

Do what you can to avoid a BOC contract Corell - it'll cost you a fortune. Ask about and see if you can get it cheap without rental. If you where close to Hartlepool i could get you a full size bottle of 80 / 20 mig gas for £30, tis fiddly but well worth it.

AndyH

correl 6th March 2010 09:55 PM

I am in cornwall a far way from you lol, I have asked around and it works out £75 a year for the rental and £36 for the gas and if i dont need the Welder any more then i can get a refund of the remaining years rental. I dont wanna use them stupid small bottles out in 20mins and cost £15 a bottle here and thats with discount!!

twinturbo 7th March 2010 07:27 AM

???? Havent you asked that twice already??:o

Spud has built his roadster, IVA'd and on the road.
Handy is finishing his roadster off hopefully in time for Stonleigh in May. Currently at the rolling running stage.

Spud and Handy have also operate as Saturn Sports Cars

correl 7th March 2010 06:31 PM

yeah I never wrote that??? How odd

correl 7th March 2010 07:40 PM

well I am at the workshop again measuring and laying out the lower tubes for the transmission tunnel, its really cold tonight. Can barely feel my fingers!! LoL

No heating :-( need to work hard to make heat lol

correl 7th March 2010 10:36 PM

well a night of head scratching and measuring for sorting the trans tunnel lol

Still none the wiser really lol

4x4's prop ain't centered so tunnel is going to have to be widened I think.

More measuring tomorrow I think lol

Yeah , i saw that in this pic.

Gives the driver moor room :)

TT

correl 8th March 2010 11:41 AM

I know why its done that way is coz it give room driver's side for the exhaust but the rear diff isn't as far over as the transfer box I guess coz the cat is right along side the transfer box, (not yet looking and exhaust so that's another day lol)

could do with like about 2 months off work so I can really get on lol, couple of hours here and there is making go over the same stuff again and again Grr

Bonzo 9th March 2010 08:53 AM

Just been looking at your progress pics

Now you have the engine in situ .... Have you given any thoughts as to how you are going to route the steering gear past the Transversely mounted Zetec engine

deezee 9th March 2010 12:07 PM

Wow, see what you mean Ronnie. Steering rack could be squeezed in around that engine mount, but not sure its going to sit at the correct angle to the hubs. But the steering column? Well thats going to take quite a few UJ's to twist around the engine to meet up with the drive input. I'm assuming Correl will be using the power steering rack off the donor car?

AshG 9th March 2010 12:18 PM

he is going to have to move the front wheels back by the looks of it. there is no way the drive shafts at the front are going to be froward enough to meet the hubs.

deezee 9th March 2010 01:13 PM

If the front hubs and wishbones move back to the middle of the engine compartment, then they'll need redesigning surely? Also its kind of going to make a mess of the pedal area. Wonder how this will handle with the track being 30cms wider and the base 45cms(?) shorter

correl 9th March 2010 01:14 PM

Yes the drive shafts mean the front suspension has to come back a little and the steering rack is going where it goes on the donor car behind the engine so lots easier and the rack goes at the same height as the rear engine mount if you look in the photos it will be easy

correl 13th March 2010 07:35 PM

Well I have started on the engine mounts but due to mothers day it holding me back from getting on with them lol. Dam fake days lol just excuses to waste kit car budget money lol

richardk 13th March 2010 07:53 PM

Correl, first time of reading this post and I'm really impressed so far, refreshing to see something really different. Nice work.

Cheers

Rich

mark 20th March 2010 04:31 PM

Thats a tight fit

Where are you going to route that exhaust? straight out of the nose cone :D

Its going to be interesting seeing how you overcome all the problems you are going to encounter.

You must like a good challenge, good luck and keep the pics coming

richardk 20th March 2010 05:58 PM

Now's a good time to think about the steering downlink as that's going to be tough, this is how I did mine which may give you an idea.

You're doing well...I was at mine over 3 years!!

Cheers

Rich

Davey 20th March 2010 06:31 PM

Its certainly an interesting project and you're getting on exceptionally well with it but I do wonder what its going to handle like. I mean mine's gonna have 200KGs of Cosworth V6 in it but at least I can get it behind the front axle line, you've got a super light chassis with five eighths of sod all at the rear and a fairly heavy lump of metal in front of the front axle line. weight distribution is going to be ................................different:confused : ?

D.

HandyAndy 20th March 2010 08:00 PM

Wow Correl

You,re certainly not hanging about are you ????

Looking good, tho it must be a heck of a challenge to get everything in place & workable without any guides to point you in the right direction.

keep the pics coming :)

cheers
andy

correl 21st March 2010 08:35 AM

getting the engine mounts done, then looking at the steering rack, once the rack is in place I can put in steering column and pedal box position's.

There's nothing like building something completely for your self is there, feels good and makes you feel confident
