Ayjay, be careful of the spokes in the wheel, no doubt someone will rectify me if im wrong but I think its a fail if the spokes of the steering wheel has holes or slots in them so maybe it would be a good idea not to change it until after the test

ayjay 21st August 2012 09:36 PM

Yep thanks .Not interested in anything with holes or slots.
Had one years ago -nearly took me out when I trapped my finger:o

K4KEV 22nd August 2012 12:53 AM

yep ....gets nasty when you start sticking fingers in holes:D :D

I intend fitting a hydraulic brake light switch. Will this one work with standard copper brake line fittings? Also would I have to make a tee joint in one of the lines to fit it

You want VAG part 113 954 515H. It looks almost the same as the one on your picture, but has a tapering M10x1 thread. http://www.partsbase.net/part/aud-113945515h

I have a problem with mine though. Looks like it's a bit too sensitive, and it does not always disengage when I release the pedal. Looks like the residual pressure due to friction in the MC keeps it closed. It switches of with time, espessially if I tap the MC with a wrench. Might be due to the fact that I connected mine to the secondary/front circuit, not the primary/rear. Or mine might just be defective. Ideas, anyone?

Update for posterity: I did notice that in the book Chris specifically mentioned the pressure switch has to be plumbed to the primary circuit. I rearranged the tubing a bit, now the brake light works flawlessly!

Hey mate, welcome back, congratulations on the new addition to the family, it will be good to catch-up, i'm nowhere near as far along as Ayjay yet having a new workshop built alongside the garage at the in-laws. Im off to Corfu next week so if you want to meet up when im back and get Ayjay to come along as well

Arfon

ayjay 17th September 2012 10:35 AM

I was beginning to wonder where you were .
Congratulations but dont rush to get out of the house ,you have to enjoy them while you can. It will only seem like a few mins and they 'll be away and gone:(

TheArf 17th September 2012 12:49 PM

The car that is,

ayjay 17th September 2012 07:22 PM

The kids that is;)

leroybrown911 17th September 2012 09:22 PM

Hi chaps, yeah would be good to catch up. No chance of rushing out the garage the boss keeps me well in check! Haha!

But hope to do a bit before Xmas. Did a bit of grinding on my 'chopped' sump today, was like being reunited with an old friend, trusty angle grinder! :D

TheArf 17th September 2012 09:32 PM

Well I have enroled at Yale tonight on a 2D cad course hopefully move on to the 3D later on. Hope to go around to the new workshop tomorrow night and start to do some of the wiring on the sockets and then in with lights before the guy comes around to levle out the floor. Once he has completed that it will be in with the lathe, parts washer, grit blaster, powder coating and oven. Oh and then the work benches, bench grinders and compressor. Done a deal with a guy today to buy his two tear old engine hoist from him for £60 so no more bad backs from lifting engines, getting a bit old for that now.

Arfon

by the way Lee you haven't told us the name of the newest edition to the family

leroybrown911 17th September 2012 09:40 PM

Lois Ann Roberts, she is real cute (doesnt get it from me!) she is 4 months old now! time flies!

Wow, thats some workshop, would keep that quiet or you will be constantly doing favors! I would love a NC mill or lathe. Been looking at this for my roll cage:

Am looking for a small miller in the new year nothing fancy just a bog standard out of the box miller

oh yes and I must agree, if she is a little cuttie she must take after her mum

Its a wrap.

Went for a spin up the road today.Naughty I know but it was very quiet and I couldn't resist it. Got into 3rd gear with a bit of speed up. But what a strange experience . I'm used to wind in the face ,wind noise etc with the bike but it was a wierd feeling looking down the bonnet, sitting so low and watching the wheels steer and spring on the bumps. Very strange , surreal.

alga 23rd September 2012 01:30 PM

Hehe, I've done about 50 km up and down the unnamed road that links my village with the nearest steet.

A question for anyone who has a Sierra speedo/instrument pod please.

My speedo needle is hanging downwards to 6 o clock. It should obviously be at zero but there is no stop pin and I cant find any sign of one that may have been snapped off at some time. I can easily drill a tiny hole and glue in a pin but I would just like to know what was there originally.:o

twinturbo 13th October 2012 07:40 PM

A stop pin as far as I Recall..

Give me a moment.

TT

twinturbo 13th October 2012 07:43 PM

No Stop pin, it must be internal.

The needle probably needs re-aligining with zero

ayjay 13th October 2012 07:45 PM

Thanks TT

Any ideas how?

twinturbo 13th October 2012 07:50 PM

Pull it off, turn it to 0 and push it back on.

TT

ayjay 13th October 2012 08:31 PM

Simples:o:o

Next question--I am buying up a few clocks/guages for my post IVA dash.Would any electric impulse type rev counter/tacho work accurately with my sierra cvh. Also is my oil pressure switch fairly easily adapted to a tube for oil pressure guage.

Thanks in advance.

ayjay 13th October 2012 11:12 PM

Any wisdom on previous post please?

twinturbo 13th October 2012 11:17 PM

most reve counters will take a coil input with a swithch on them for the cylinder config

I would use a non capilary electrical oil guage

Does the oil guage need a different sensor to replace the switch

alga 14th October 2012 04:45 AM

Of course; they usually provide a pressure switch output, too.

twinturbo 14th October 2012 06:58 AM

Normaly a Tee piece is put into the block, the pressure switch and a pressure sender then fit into that.

The disadvantage usualy of electrical guages is that they only do a 180 sweep and not 280ish like the capillary ones.

I,ve used a sandwich plate to allow electrical oil pressure & oil temps senders to be fitted, tho I had a slight problem getting a reading at first.....the sandwich plate allows the fitting of 4 senders to be installed, I had my 2 senders fitted at the the lower part of the plate, I couldn,t understand why getting no readings, swapped the 2 senders & placed them into the upper part of the sandwich plate = problem solved...not sure why but it worked .

I,m running a 1.8 CVH engine

cheers
andy

ayjay 15th October 2012 07:45 PM

Sandwich plate?WOSSAT:o - Were you feeling a bit peckish.

alga 15th October 2012 11:22 PM

An adapter that fits between the oil filter and the engine.

ayjay 15th October 2012 11:34 PM

Thanks Albert-now it makes sense:)

ayjay 16th October 2012 11:32 PM

2 Years approx. since I got started on my build .Going to compile a checklist of stuff that needs sorting out over the winter then IVA Spring 2013. Hopefully will do a few shakedown drives and tests( airfield ,private road)before that.

Just wondering how long others have been at it and who and how many are due to hit the road next year. I suspect that 2013 may see the birth of quite a few.

TheArf 17th October 2012 08:09 PM

Well I will be aiming to now new workshop almost finished but it wont be in the spring

Arfon

ayjay 17th October 2012 08:44 PM

Advice please.

My mechanical fuel pump is U/S and its the non-repairable type(1.8 cvh)
Is there any reason why I cant use a motorcycle fuel pump(which I happen to have in the garage!;) )?

I suppose I'll have to try it and see:o
