Thats 3 out of the 5 engine mounts in, need to tidy them up and fabricate the steering rack bracket and then the 4th engine mount as the mount goes over the rack

correl 7th April 2010 03:02 PM

Ok I haven't dropped off the face of the earth, the reson why the posts haven't been updated is coz i have done my back in and can barely walk

Hope to be on my feet soon though!!

correl 7th April 2010 03:09 PM

I will add thought the 4th mount is fitted and the steering rack is in position too. One more mount and the engine can come out again?

HandyAndy 7th April 2010 03:40 PM

nice work Correl, look forward to some more pics soon,
hope you get back to full health soon , I have a pain in the neck but she,s at home so thats ok :D

did you get the dimensions I pm,d to you?

cheers
andy

correl 10th April 2010 09:56 AM

yes got them thanks for that, will be helpful when my back is back to full strength so I can use those dimension's to plot the drive shafts etc

correl 19th April 2010 08:35 AM

Well the final mount is in and is going to be renforced tonight, will try to remember my camera. Then mark all the mounts to show where I can round them off and out comes the engine so I can roll the chassis over and weld the bottom and an other places I couldn't get until now. So more photos soon

I presume this build is dead as we haven't heard anything for nearly 2 years, shame:(

I would guess, that given his last post on here was for ideas on how to get the drive to the front wheels, that the cost of a bespoke gearbox has put paid to this project.

I could never see how it was going to work , be IVAable and look ok.

james3004 14th April 2012 06:28 PM

I had my doubts

robo 14th April 2012 08:32 PM

The challenge is at the front. The lump of transferbox that will intrude into the cockpit is far enough back to not be a problem, it basically ends up under your knees which are bent anyway. the shaft going forward is inside the tunnel long before it gets to the pedals so thats not an issue. Then comes the front. The way i saw it was the the diff has only one place to go so thats where the steering rack will end up and the driveshafts would have to go through where the front springs go. So it would have to be cantilever springs and shocks mounted inboard and that then that just leaves the steering rack. The only way I could see a route for the steering column to get to the steering rack would be one of those steering angle drives like the ones used on forward control small commercials . The rack could then be mounted with the spline looking straight up and the column could point over the top of the halfshaft then change direction via the miter box. Simples

If I had more time I would relish the challenge

I guess this is why Ford running gear is suggested is best, i did think it was a difficult way to go.

Shame still, be good to know what happend though.

wolly:)

Talonmotorsport 14th April 2012 10:26 PM

My approch would be to go with an Impreza engine, gear box and uprights, push the engine as far forward as possible putting the drive shafts in front of the bulk heads. I think we had this conversation two weeks ago?

MarkB 15th April 2012 10:34 AM

A 4x4 7 is nowt new, Dax did it years ago and perhaps they don't do it now for a reason?........I would say pointless as the thing will be big clumsy and very heavy and the complete opposite of what a light weight sports car is meant to be.

twinturbo 15th April 2012 10:49 AM

Dax still sell the rush Quadra.

~10% weight gain

ozzy1 16th April 2012 02:24 PM

Maybe its finished and on the road  :D .There are a few people out here building 4wd electric one apparently.

twinturbo 16th April 2012 02:35 PM

Lot easier to package 1,2 or 4 traction motors than a transverse engine and box.

Just the batteries to hide!
