Does anyone know whether any other speedos eg cortina or escort will fit the sierra speedo cable and give a fairly accurate reading.
I'm collecting classic guages for post iva dash and only need the speedo now. Thanks in advance. |

Most speedo`s are rated at 1000rpm at 60mph so any speedo in theory will do the job. There are plenty of outfits that can make up a mongrel speedo cable.
Edit. anything you do to the driveline bigger/smaller wheels, diff ratios and gearbox changes can change the ratio per mph and that is normally frigged by changing the plastic drive gears in the box or getting one of those in line adaptors. Heres a yank page of blurb on it but the same applies here.http://www.partshp.com/speedometer_gears.htm http://www.venhill.co.uk/Home are worth a try. Another edit. Wheres my Cigar:) :) Bob |
Another edit. Wheres my Cigar:)
Bob:) :) Its bad for you:mad: BTW any news? Thanks for the helpful reply(I once swapped my 1963 Mini speedo for a triumph one cos it was smarter---It was like fitting a supercharger ,I could hit 60mph in second gear) |
Previous test drives have made me wonder if I could stand more than 10 mins in a roadster -feeling every speck of dust on the road and everything vibrating so much the view in the mirrrors was blurred.
Today whilst working down my "suspension and steering " checklist .I arrived at "check tyre pressures" and used a little dial type instead of the sliding tube type.Tube said 20psi dial said 35psi  I decided to believe the dial ,dropped the pressure to 15psi ( until a slight bulge appeared at the contact point) .:) Downside is my bellhousing scraped the little hump before the garage door:o Just added "sumpguard" to my checklist! Q. Book says 18-20 psi. What do others with cvh run at please? |
I have found its better to start off with the the tyres soft and the shocks backed off to the softest setting . Dial in the minimum amount of shock on the rear as you can get away with, its the shocks that jar your spine not the springs. The tyre pressure thing is not set in stone and will vary from car to car, its more to do with keeping the tyre contact patch flat on the road. Car manufacturer`s spend millions fine tuning all these factors so it wont be a five minute job to dial in some comfort/handling.

Sounds like good advice. They dont need to be rock hard on the road. Ill play about with it til it feels right:o

Tyre pressures and damper settings do make a surprising difference and the car is very sensitive to them. I've found that 18psi on our cruising roads dampers about half way gives a nice compromise. Another 2psi and stiffer dampers makes for a much harsher ride. On the nice smooth track i'll set the tyres at 16psi and let them warm up and turn the dampers right up, makes the car a lot more positive but you need smooth tarmac for it.
Have fun testing...........AndyH |
Well one thing they aint got in coedpoeth is smooth tarmac, just remind me Ayjay, how deep are the ruts in the roads upthere after all those two wheeled carts going up and down.

Ayjay is temporarily out of commission
Was re-fitting roll bar harness attachments which were welded and filleted to the roll bar cross member .Stepped up the drill size to 20mm to drill through the CM.First one ok ,2nd the drill bit jammed ,the drill kicked back Ayjays finger is stiicking out sideways:eek: Straighten it out while its still numb then go indoors for some tea and sympathy.(neither forthcoming) Swelling badly so wifey drove to A&E "The only time I drive the car with you in it is to A&E" After x-ray nursey says "Its ok its not broken:) --------its smashed:( Ayjay gets his own back "Will I be able to play the piano when it heals" she fell for it:D |
Thought you were coming to give me a HAND with my build, I don't know the lenghts some people will go to just so they dont have to put the kettle on.
Will give you a bell soon mate Arfon |
Oh dear Ayjay mate, just seen this post! But dont worry they can transplant a hand these days, so straightening a finger should be a breeze!

Welcome back Leroy .Where you been ? Hope all is ok.:)

Congratulations !
Looks great... now change the steering wheel ;) |
Just posted IVA application:eek:
I've not posted much here lately because I am pretty much finished. Just faffing about with bits and pieces. Just a couple of jobs to do now and sending in the app will focus my mind:rolleyes: I went for a longish test drive( dont ask!) And spent a couple of hours screaming round a large private car park and nothing fell off. |
What did the neighbours say about you razing about creating havoc
Arfon |
The neighbors weren't bothered in the least.Even though we made enough noise to wake the dead:cool:
|
Naughty naughty :D
I daren't drive mine on the road prior to IVA - one of b$£^%$£d neighbours phoned the police last year because I'd parked my tin top within 10 meters of the junction for a couple of hours. They'd have a field day if they saw me driving an unregistered car on the road  |

Isn't it sad and irritating when you have to live near those sort of people. We had a nasty anonymous letter promising trouble if we didnt get rid of our cockerel. I went round them to ask but no one would admit sending it.Most said they liked to hear it.we got rid of it anyway just to keep the peace.I have a good idea though that it is the local parking policeman who has nothing better to do than complain when people park somewhere within 100 m of his house:mad:
|
Had to pay VOSA £450 today so should get a date soon:eek:
|
It's not cheap getting these things on the road is it?
Add a re-test fee, insurance, tax, and dvla registration fee and you're looking at the best part of a grand :( Nice one on getting the IVA applied for though! |
Been fettling a few things while waiting for my test date in Manchester .One or two major issues.I took the car to a weighbridge just in case I needed to provide actual weights .
Weighed in at 740kg total 340 front and 400 rear with me in it and half tank of fuel. On the way back I realised the ns rear drum brake was binding badly and very hot. No tools so I made it home. When I took the hub off the shoes were quite charred .I couldnt see any obvious problem so cleaned it up stuck everything back together and seems to work ok. Problem is if it happens again while its being tested then I am snookered so I need to solve the problem . Any ideas on tracks to follow please? While it was up on the jack I found movement in the os wheel bearing so thats on the list for next week. Also sump has started leaking oil from the weld . One step forward two back at the mo and IVA looming:( |
I just did my rear wheel bearings and they were easy, £14 a side from my local motor factors. I followed this guide and used some large sockets to drive the bearing home, filled with grease and put back on the car.
As or the breaks I have no idea, did you replace the springs? |

Now the exiting orifice will be going dollar dime dollar dime, give me a shout if you need a hand with anything mate and i will get the letter and number stamps out ready this weekend
Arfon |
Discovered today that my "worn wheel bearing" is actually due to excessive play in the suspension bushes . Either the bush inserts are too big or the bolts are too thin:mad:
|
Come on Ayjay how long have you been on here the bolts are not to thin they are just the wrong Diameter, what size do you need mate, measure it up and let me know as we have a few different sizes in work
Arfon |
Diameter schmiameter:mad:
|
Anyone know whether any other speedo cables will fit my t9 to sierra sapphire speedo? (eg Escort)The original is quite long .One a bit shorter would be neater.;)
Still working through a rolling checklist.Tidied up some edges etc will try to fix leaky sump ,probably at the weld:rolleyes: |
If you want to drop the sump off and bring it down to my place mate we can sort that out for you
Arfon |
