A little update
I,ve been busy tinkering away lately....
So the result being that if I don,t have any problems bleeding the brake system, By this time next week my Roadster will be going for a little test drive, on a private road :), Tho, today I,ve been fitting a seat runner & its doing my head in , what a bloomin faff on that is  :D Only other major things to do to the car is fit the tranny tunnel panels, n/s rear arch & a boot lid, & fit the brake/indicator lights to the rear wings. cheers andy |
booked your iva yet? :D at this rate you will only be a year late getting to stoneleigh in the roadster :D

No not yet , I,ve noticed other builders are booking them & getting a test date fairly quickly , I don,t think I,d be ready in time if that happened  plus , I,m ermm saving up for the fee  gulp.....thats gonna hurt :D are you still in the U S of A? if so.....got any room for a megajolt system in ya suitcase? :D cheers andy |
wow andy your nearly there mate - need owt helping with? got another welding job if your free anytime mate - was out int car today - just going on to the A1 - hmmm thats not supposed to happen - the gear lever snapped off in my hand.. lol.. had to use a multi tool to get home - just flicking the rods through the hole.. had to be careful i didnt catch the prop... so if your welding moosheen is still working would it be able to make my rod whole again? :)

Cheers about my car:) you,ll have to come & video the first drive...hopefully it,ll be next weekend, as long as the "bleeding brakes" :D behave themselves when I put fluid in the system. cheers andy |
like a kid at christmas
I spoke to the supplier where I,ve ordered my prop from today.....its despatched today for next day delivery..... subject to the weather its going for a little test drive tomorrow ..... I thought this day would never come :D

The prop has been made to measure by Dunning & Fairbanks in Leeds, I ordered the uprated one that can handle upto approx 250HP from the crankshaft.....cost was £105 + £12 delivery + VAT...Total £137.?? cheers andy |
Supa, all gives me extra time to make the garage ready for the return of my chassis.. By the time I am done you will have room to be able to swing the cat :)
Powered moving is just as monumentous as the first fire up. I remember the day I drove my converted saphire out the garage. Awesome. TT |

But I,m sure just being able to reverse it out of the garage & drive it back in instead of pushing it will put a big smile on my ugly mug  cheers andy |
Nice one Andy. I bought my prop from D&F it's a lovely job. Mine cost a load more though as I had to have the MT75 adapter as well. Really good service from them and they were amongst the cheapest that I could find.
I am sure you will savour that very first drive, I know I enjoyed mine:) Enoch |

swmbo thinks I,m daft being excited about being able to reverse it out of the garage:rolleyes: ( she doesn,t drive at all). Yes, the service from D&F has been very good, I confirmed the dimensions of my prop on tuesday, I asked if poss would I have it in time for this weekend, the guy said that they would do their best as they had guys on holiday, I phoned today as he suggested & Yes, its made & its on a TNT wagon en route to me, very good service indeed  cheers andy ps...off to read your build update, always enjoy your updates:) |
A little update
I,d like to say a huge thanks to forum member "Tex" :)
He came over to help me bleed my brake system on sunday afternoon, tho it wasn,t without a slight mishap ....... Terry had asked me before we started if I,d checked all connections were tight in the brake lines, yes was my answer.. filled up the M/C & started pumping the pedal, bleeding each of the rear drums & front calipers, must,ve done it about 4 times each, still not getting a firm pedal......had thoughts of the nightmare that Ash had with his brakes, I then noticed a small pool of fluid on the floor.....guess who hadn,t fully tightened the brake pressure switch???? :o Once that was nipped up, I,m glad to report that the brakes are now leak free & has a firm pedal pressure :) Which only meant one thing....another little test drive :D still grinning from ear to ear. So, a BIG thanks to Tex, cheers mate . Am now considering to doing a track day next saturday night ....must resist lol cheers andy |
:D THE CALL OF THE TRACK CANNOT BE RESISTED:D
Well Done...AndyH |

tell you what Spud, I,ll get stuck in on the final few things left to do to my car & see how things are by tuesday, if the car is track worthy I,ll go for it....gulp. Brings back memories of itching to get back onto a Race bike after suffering broken bones in a previous crash, ended up riding again with still broken fingers  :D such is the call of the track. cheers andy |
Do it you big girls blouse !!!!! you know you want too.
I can understand the feeling with getting the car moving under its own power ,I was high for a week after my first solo flight and still remember it as though it was yesterday. See you at Teeside :p . |

All I,d like to say at this point is Thankyou Mr Chris Gibbs  cheers andy |
you would be good getting the wheels aligned first tho. :-) and defo put some covers over the prop before running it at any speed andy. Ps have you done with the engine hoist mate? Gotta need for it for a friend.
|
This Roadster of mine is now starting to test my patience
It will be going for the IVA test next month , tho I,m not telling the date .....my BIG secret :D So, I,m doing the last few odd jobs at the mo...today for instance I was working on making the final connections to a new gauge in my dash & had to disconnect the speedo cable to gain better access....no worries there, any way, did the gauge wiring, then ran the car upto to temp to make sure said gauge was working ok......it was, so , I thought "ah, whilst its running I,ll give it a quick spin " .....then noticed the speedo wasn,t working ...aarggh, ( yes I had reconnected it ), so sets to investigating the cause....turns out the circlip holding the cable into the gearbox had snapped, how I have no idea, now this is not the most easily reached area of the tunnel....had to take the tunnel side panel off to sort it , Now its left me with something thats baffling me, the oil temp gauge is now reading 120???? it had only been running a few mins  aarrghhh Any thoughts on the reason why please guys? It will NOT beat me :D ....still felt great to drive it. cheers andy |
Sounds like you have had a frustrating day today Andy.
I know how bad it feels to take one step forward & take two back :( The only thing that springs to my mind is, are you sure you have the right sender unit for the gauge ? ( I suspect that you bought them as a set, complete with senders ) Perhaps the sender is Air locked, causing a false reading !! I do know that the CVH engine does run quite hot but don't know that the oil temp shoud be :o Hope you get it sorted soon mate :) |
Cheers Ronnie ,
Being truthful, I did quite enjoy the day working on the car, sun was out , car was looking good & the little odd jobs are quite satisfying as they don,t take too long to finish ( if that makes sense, gives a sense of achievement completing the task etc) Yes, all the senders are correct for the gauges as bought as a set etc, the oil temp gauge has worked before & seemed happy at 80, but now showing 120 after only a few mins running, when i first start the engine it takes ages to register any oil temp, then all of a sudden today it jumped to 120  I,m starting to think maybe I have a poor earth somewhere, tho it shouldn,t have as all my earth connections are new & secure etc... Ahh, maybe its just the car "trying it on" with me , Just got 3 things left to do to the car, bootlid bit more trim & the one I,m dreading.....fitting the bonnet catches, now normally this is fairly straight forward but I,m using Dzus fasteners & its critical that the holes I drill in the bonnet line up with the catch plate in the engine bay....gulp ....don,t want to spoil my shiney bonnet  cheers andy |
maybe it is telling the truth! Could put the sender in a tin of oil while you heat the oil see what happens. Dont fry it tho!
|
Quote:
Hmmm, i,ll try your suggestion & see what the sender/gauge reads , cheers . cheers andy |
andy try to put a 2nd temp sensor like a thermometer in the pot if you can. So you can see what the guage reads against that
|
Well, its not the oil that is overheating,
I,ve worked it out that its something electrical, maybe a bad earth or a frayed wire  so will run a new wire from sender to gauge & see what happens.....have I ever said " I hate electrickery " Tho I suppose I,m relieved that the oil wasn,t at the temp the gauge was telling me ...phew :) Whilst working on the car today, 2 Police officers walked up to have a looksy ( unusual sight , seeing two actually walking the beat ), they stayed for ages, asking all sorts about the build, even asked me if I,d driven it yet :o , they weren,t looking for a booking, just seemed genuinely interested in the car, They stayed so long that they ended up getting on their radio thingy, next thing there was a Police transit van there to pick them up They were ok tho, they thought the concept of building from scratch very interesting, even asked for a spin out when its registered :D cheers andy |
Any recent pics Andy? Haven't seen it for a while.
The gauge will be a bad earth. I had the same problem with a water temp gauge a while back. To test the sender. Put a multimeter on the terminals and check there's some resistance there. Ususally as the sender gets warmer, the resistance decreases. So if there's no resistance, the gauge will go straight to max. Hope that makes a bit of sense. :) |

Yes, i,ve got some new photos, once I work out how to download them from my new phone I,ll post up a couple, I sent Ash a photo earlier via MMS, maybe he could post up the pic , Ash?? Yes it sort of makes sense, it would mean even more if I knew what setting to put the multi meter on to test for resistance :o Ash phoned me earlier & was explaining just what you have said, i had the multi meter in my hand.....imagine.......blank expression on my face :o  This is whats happening.... Start engine, oil pressure gauge working nicely, water temp gauge shows increase in temp as it should The oil temp gauge does nothing for about a minute then shoots to its highest reading  confused dot com springs to mind , LOL cheers andy |
Hmm sounds strange, I would guess at faulty sender.
|
Cheers David & Adrian,
David... that was my next thought, as its worked ok in the past  Adrian.... The gause has... terminals for Positive + Negative - from sender then has a wire from the gauge for the gauge light that goes into a little black box ( each of the gauges has this box ), then from the little black box its then connected to the cars lighting wiring. Everything works apart from the Oil temp gauge, it shoots off the scale. I got the gauges off ebay, might have to contact them & ask what maybe wrong etc, maybe they,ll replace the possible faulty gauge or sender :) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Meter-Gauge-OI...item2562496cdb This is the gauge , cheers andy |
Looks awesome, well done!
Just a question from me as it is perfect timing for where I am up to on my build and currently scratching my head. Are your rear lower wishbones the right way up? only in the 'bible' it shows them the opposite way up? |
Quote:
Thanks Lee :) Good question In the bible the rear lower wishbones are shown fitted in 2 different ways....page 44 fig 4.16 shows 1 way then on page 74 fig 5.32 shows them the opposite way  I chose the position from page 44, after looking at other builders build pics etc & also thinking of any possible torsional tension the bones have when car is under load ( tho this was purely my own interpretation of the effect ) when travelling forward, as the car won,t be in reverse that much etc etc :D Hope this helps, & being totally honest would also appreciate any thoughts on this, interesting question:) cheers andy |
Bolt them on with the triangley shaped side towards the front of the car and the single leg at the rear........if that makes sense? If it was a race car that rear leg would be called a "toe link" and would be adjustable.
|
car suspension is like Shakespeare....."bloody confusing and lots of guff spoken about it" oh and Shakespeare must have been gay as he wore a dress and tights everyday, whereas I only wear them every other day........:D
|
Quote:
Sorry Mark, not sure how you mean? I,ve just looked at Ash,s build pics & my rear lower bones are fitted in same way.... cheers andy |
had a look at Ash's pics and can't find a pic showing the rear 'bones....:o
they are "N" shaped yep? now looking at the letter N the first leg wants to be towards the rear of the car so this letter N would be drivers side....confused?:D |
Quote:
Ahhh, that makes perfect sense to me now, I get it  :D And thats how mine are fitted  now what ever we do...lets not make a wishbone in the shape of the letter "M" LOL. cheers Mark. andy |
Had a look at Saturn's MX 5 pics and it shows the passenger side the right way round and the drivers side wearing a passenger side wishbone and you will see what I mean about the rear leg:)
